Environmental Educator (City-Wide)

 

The Citywide Environmental Education team is looking to hire two Environmental Educators to teach nature programing and oversee volunteers teaching programs for audiences of all ages.

We are seeking two enthusiastic and engaging educators with knowledge of PNW flora and fauna to assist our team. The people hired in this position will assist the school and organized group program coordinator and the environmental education supervisor.

This position will work in parks all over the city of Seattle with families and communities of all ages. The position is a part-time position with an estimated 5-10 hours per week depending on programming needs. Programs will primarily be on evenings and weekends with the occasional weekday program to assist with school fieldtrips.

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) manages over 485 parks - a 6,400-acre park system covering about 12% of the total land area of Seattle. This ARC position will be working alongside and supporting SPR educators on the Environmental Education Team that run programing in many of these parks.

 

Pay Range:

  • Starting Pay: $24.00/hour
  • Full salary range $23.00-$26.45 (Over time, the employee in this role may earn up to $26.45/hr with additional years of service.)

 

 

Schedule:

  • Evenings and weekends (some weekdays)
  • Part time (5-15 hours/week)
  • Estimated start date: 11/7/2025

 

 

Responsibilities and Duties include the following:

  • Offer outdoor nature programs for the public, families and SPS K-5th grade classes
  • Assist in the development and delivery of special events and custom programs as needed
  • Take on special job duties and small projects as assigned

 

 

Care and Safety

  • Maintain a safe, friendly and fun learning environment
  • Supervise up to 20 kids at a time with minimal support or supervision
  • Serve as a positive role model for kids and families and use positive behavior guidance strategies
  • Manage and support trained volunteers that teach education programs alongside this position

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year of experience teaching all ages outdoors
  • Experience working on a team with volunteers
  • One year of college level education, preferably with course work in the natural sciences and/or education
  • Demonstrated experience working with families, community members and partners to foster positive relationships
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

 

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • 6 months of experience developing nature-based programs and curriculum for outdoor environmental programs
  • Relevant experience working with diverse age groups, from youth to adult
  • Knowledge of Pacific NW forest ecology and local flora/fauna and their interrelationships and the impacts from humans on the natural environment
  • Ability to make connections between the urban and natural environment and make current critical environmental issues relevant to diverse audiences
  • Ability to work cohesively in a team or partnership setting, as well as independently
  • Creativity, resourcefulness, flexibility, and takes initiative
  • Certification from the National Association of Interpretation or a WA Teaching Certificate
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment and maintain safety among program participants in an outdoor setting
  • Ability to take direction and feedback in a constructive manner
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Tagalog, East African languages, Chinese, or Vietnamese
  • Fluent in the use of PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook
  • Enthusiasm, energy, and positive attitude

 

 

Work Environment/Physical Demands: 

  • During nature walks and park activities, naturalists spend long periods of time standing or walking in all types of weather conditions and terrains
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

 

 

License, Certification and Other Requirements:

  • Current valid State of Washington driver's license 
  • First aid and CPR certificate within six months of hire
  • If hired, must pass criminal background check, provide proof of eligibility to work in the US and sign up for direct deposit with either checking or savings account
