Under general supervision, this internship will support the City of Arlington Information Technology Department by assisting with a range of technical, administrative, and project-based assignments. This role will work with the Information Security and Privacy Office’s Purple Team to convert findings into quantifiable improvements in detection, response, and prevention. The intern will gain hands-on experience in IT support, systems management, security and technology projects while contributing to the department’s mission of providing reliable and secure technology services for the City of Arlington and its residents.This is a competitive 16-week, part-time internship (20 hours/week, Monday - Thursday) jointly offered by the University of Texas at Arlington and the City of Arlington. This program provided immersive, hands-on experience in municipal government operations, fostering professional development through real-world projects and exposure.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Discover unmanaged or unknown devices, services, and cloud assets using approved scanners and open-source techniques.
- Identify and validate vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, and missing controls that could be exploited in real conditions.
- Map potential attack paths across endpoints, identity, networks, and cloud resources, then document choke points and control gaps.
- Analyze results from vulnerability scans, endpoint management, and cloud security posture tools to detect gaps and prioritize fixes.
- Hunt for shadow technology including unauthorized SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS services and assess associated risks, leveraging Artificial Intelligence where possible.
- Correlate findings with logging data and alerts to confirm detection coverage and tune signals with the security operations team.
- Recommend actionable improvements to eliminate exposures and strengthen controls with clear ownership and timelines.
- Document findings in risk-focused reports tailored to technical and executive audiences.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Attend program-required orientation, check-ins, and Lunch & Learn sessions.
- Provide feedback through 30%, 60%, and 90% program evaluations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge of basic computer operations, operating systems, and common office software applications.
• Knowledge of vulnerability scanning, cloud security concepts, and endpoint hardening.
• Knowledge of IT support practices and troubleshooting methods.
• Ability to use approved AI tools for drafting, research, analysis, and summarizing.
• Skill in using Microsoft Office Suite; basic knowledge of networking concepts preferred.
• Skill in using PC Software including current Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
• Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
• Ability to prioritize deadlines and tasks.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment utilizing knowledge of the organization's policies.

QUALIFYING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Currently enrolled University of Texas at Arlington, majoring in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems Management, or a related field. Preference will be given to students in the Honors track.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred.
• Understanding of asset management, vulnerability management, network fundamentals, and operating system basics.
• Familiarity with common attack techniques and security frameworks such as MITRE ATT&CK, CIS Controls, and NIST.
• Exposure to vulnerability scanners such as Tenable, Qualys, or OpenVAS and discovery tools such as Nmap or Shodan.
• Experience with cloud security posture tools such as Microsoft Defender for Cloud.
• Familiarity with scripting for automation in Python or PowerShell and source control using Git.
• Understanding of identity security in Active Directory and Entra ID including common escalation paths.
• Awareness of shadow IT risks and SaaS discovery methods including browser and network-based approaches.
• Strong curiosity, analytical mindset, attention to detail, and clear written communication.
• Coursework or practical experience in IT support, networking, cybersecurity, or software development.
• Experience with help desk ticketing systems, database management, or programming languages.
