JOB SUMMARY
Assists special education teaching staff in a self-contained setting by performing instructional tasks in small groups and one-on-one settings; performs record keeping, supervision and interventions for special-education students with moderate or profound disabilities. Performs duties with moderate supervision.
May include providing specialized instructional support to a caseload under the direction and supervision of a related service provider or other education specialists. May include training in and performance of invasive medical procedures as designated by individual student health plan which may include but are not limited to: catheterization, ileostomy or colostomy bag care, oral suctioning, gastric/feeding utilization and care, and rectal diastat administration.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Follows and maintains knowledge of applicable District policy(ies) and procedures.
2. Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments (reading, math, and writing groups.)
3. Works directly with students with a variety of special needs, including profound disabilities.
4. Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.
5. Assists students with tracking assignments and managing behaviors.
6. Tests and evaluates students’ abilities in math, writing, and reading and progress as directed by licensed staff member.
7. May be asked to clean up spills and wipe down tables in cafeteria when assigned supervision duty.
8. Monitors and assists students as needed in the classroom, at recess, and at lunch.
9. Supervises large groups of children at recess and lunch ensuring safety and security at all times.
10. Assists with physical management of students including lifting, moving, positioning, feeding, and toileting or diapering and restraint when necessary under direction of the teacher.
11. Assists with physical needs of students (carrying books, clearing access ways, etc.)
12. Escorts and supervises assigned students in various activities (music, PE, recess, library, etc.).
13. Implements and tracks Individual Education Plan (IEP) data.
14. Models appropriate behavior in various social settings.
15. Presents subject matter to students, utilizing variety of methods and techniques such as lecture, discussion and supervised role playing.
16. Confers with teaching staff on progress of students.
17. Performs clerical duties, checks notebooks, corrects papers, scores tests, and records grades.
18. Assists staff with record keeping, copying, filing, grading assignments and taking attendance.
19. Transports recess equipment outside, reports unsafe equipment and secures equipment when not in use.
20. Assists with loading and unloading students from buses.
21. Provide for the care, health, and safety of special education students.
22. Assists the teacher/special needs students with non-instructional classroom duties such as snack, toilet, and clothing routines.
23. Assists the teacher in duties relating to supervision of playground, study hall, cafeteria, and bus loading activities.
24. Assists the licensed staff member in developing educational materials (copying, typing, laminating, etc.)
25. Implements daily activities and instruction for students under the direction of and planned by the licensed staff member.
26. Follows prescribed daily schedule as outlined by the building administrator.
27. Assists the licensed staff member in the set-up and maintenance of the classroom, materials and supplies.
28. Assists the licensed staff member in scheduling appropriate meetings and completion of paperwork.
29. Assists the licensed staff member, when directed, in communicating with parents/guardians.
30. Participates effectively at regular team meetings with licensed staff member and other support staff using appropriate social skills.
31. May administer medications within the scope of District policy(ies) and state and federal law, under the direction of licensed staff or building administrator.
32. Under the direction of a medical provider (e.g. school nurse), receives training in and performs invasive, medically necessary health procedures in accordance with an individualized health plan in the education setting. Invasive procedures may include but are not limited to: catheterization, ileostomy or colostomy bag care, oral suctioning, gastric/feeding utilization and care, and rectal diastat administration.
33. Under the direction of a related service provider (e.g. augmentative communications specialist, physical or occupational therapist or other specialist), receives significant training in specialist area; provides instructional support and data tracking for the specialist’s caseload or facilitates individual student access using specialized adaptive technology on a full-time basis (e.g. text to speech, eye gaze technology, live captioning).
34. Provides a variety of instructional activities including but not limited to transition programs, adaptive physical activity, life-skills practice and remedial work as designed by teacher for special needs students.
35. Assists in providing for the communication, nutritional, and physical needs of the student and administering of student health plan as needed.
36. Performs physical interventions, prompts, restraints or seclusions of an intense and regular nature in accordance with District policy and applicable statutes in the classroom.
37. Maintains current certification in crisis intervention procedures.
38. Assists in maintaining a safe environment for students at all times.
39. Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.
40. Works collaboratively with District and building administrators as well as other department staff to provide reliable service to customers.
41. Communicate clearly with coworkers and other staff.

MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. May assist office staff and teachers as necessary including answering telephones, routing telephone calls or messages to appropriate staff and operating general office machinery including photocopy machine, computer and fax machine.
2. Performs minor first aid in compliance with District policy(ies) and completes required paperwork in a timely fashion.
3. Fills out communication log(s).
4. Washes and dries student’s clothing as needed.
5. General cleaning including washing dishes, vacuuming and sanitizing.
6. Files documents and records according to predetermined classifications, maintaining alphabetical index, and cross references files.
7. Attends in-service trainings. 8. Attends staff meetings.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
