Job Description

Department: Cashiers Office

General Statement of Job

The Cashier III coordinates duties of the cashiers; ensures that the cashier office fulfills the needs of the students by providing excellent customer service and ensuring that procedures and internal controls of student payments are adhered to. Supervises cashiering staff.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Prepares accurate and timely cash deposits; reviews and verifies cashiers balancing reports.
  • Responds to student account inquiries.
  • Prepares for registration process; assists the Bursar with registration process.
  • Establishes internal control procedures concerning cash transactions and access.
  • Arranges for armored car services.
  • Requests security for registration and off site events.
  • Reviews credit card report, researches credit card chargeback and electronic funds transfer (EFT) rejects.
  • Submits weekly refund approvals to accounts payable.
  • Maintains petty cash fund.
  • Verifies receipts and daily cashier transactions.
  • Handles stored value card transactions.
  • Approves orders of supplies for office and registration.
  • Recommends and approves hires of temporary part-time staff for registration.
  • Requests applicable and appropriate reports from Information Technology.
  • Tests tuition tables and all system upgrades for validity.
  • Oversees loan management system payment and disbursement feeds to finance.
  • Responsible and accountable for all tasks and responsibilities assigned.
  • Supervises cashiering staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate's Degree required.
  • At least three (3) years of teller or cashiering experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong background in computers and office automation, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and knowledge of the Windows environment.
  • Ability to interpret computerized reports.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
  • Ability to adapt to constant change and periods of fast-paced, high-intensity work situations.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 
  • Ability to apply practical understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • All applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
  • Security Sensitive position: In addition, subject to federal background check.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance.

Physical Requirements

  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
  • Visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
  • Mobility to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
