Role Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Underwriting Assistant Manager/Team Leader or Consumer Underwriting Manager/Team Leader, the Underwriter I is responsible for evaluating and making quality decisions on consumer loan applications (both direct and indirect). This role ensures adherence to Gesa Credit Union's established underwriting standards while identifying and proposing alternative financial solutions tailored to applicants' needs. Possessing intermediate knowledge in consumer lending, the Underwriter I also contribute to dealership outreach and the development of dealership portfolios and is responsible for cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with branch partners. This position requires demonstrated capability in managing moderate responsibilities beyond core underwriting duties.
What You Will Be Doing:
- Apply critical thinking skills and solid lending principles according to the needs of each applicant and their risk profile; construct and approve loan offers in accordance with delegated approval authority and loan policy under general guidance of a Sr. Underwriter or Manager
- Evaluate and mitigate risk while maintaining profitability associated with extending credit requests.
- Apply underwriting guidelines in making and defending loan decisions under moderate guidance of an immediate supervisor
- Identify and recommend additional lending opportunities to increase relationships with members
- Provide accurate pricing and terms to dealerships in a courteous/professional manner
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements, lending regulations and internal policies and procedures
- Maintain positive relationships with colleagues and business partners
- Maintain the highest level of confidentiality relative to information received directly or indirectly
- Adhere to all local, state, and federal laws/regulatory requirements as related to functional areas including Truth in Lending, Reg B, Reg Z, and Bank Secrecy Act
- Ability to analyze, research and resolve medium complexity problems under moderate guidance of an immediate supervisor
- Develop knowledge and skills through formal training classes or on-the-job experience
- Serve as resource or Subject Matter Expert for team
- Display mutual respect, trust, and dignity, acting in the best interest of the credit union. Lead by example by always displaying solid ethics and integrity. at all times
- Ensure that all issues are handled in a fair, legal, and consistent manner
About You:
- Maintain up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge of all laws, credit union products, services, policies and procedures regarding areas of responsibility, and to remain highly tuned to the marketplace, member needs and patterns of external market changes
- Participate in and support a team environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and business partners
- Demonstrate ability to make decisions in a timely manner and articulate the reasoning for decisions
- Demonstrate ability to prioritize and manage multiple demands effectively

- To effectively operate standard office equipment, computer and lending programs and programs related to areas of responsibility

- Ability to work outside of business hours, including weekends (Sundays included) and holidays
- To demonstrate flexibility and openness; to willingly change priorities, accept and act on input from supervisor, and to meet changing demands
- To develop and/or improve processes, implement, and administer policies and procedures, and organize and present information
- To maintain a positive and professional image through effective verbal and written communication
- To make quality judgments and decisions in a timely manner with extreme attention to detail
Qualifications
What You Will Need:
- High School degree, GED, or equivalent experience required
- A minimum of one (1) year in managing client relationships or handling document processing required
- One (1) to two (2) years of similar or related exposure to indirect lending/financial services preferred
- Advanced knowledge of FICO preferred
- Advanced knowledge of CUDL, Dealer Track and Route One programs preferred
- A valid Driver’s License is required
- High School degree, GED, or equivalent experience required

Full Salary Range:
$25.11 - $37.67
*While our full pay range is listed, most new team members typically start between the minimum and midpoint based on their experience and qualifications. This approach gives room to grow within the role as your career progresses with us!"
