Under general supervision, this internship will support the assigned City of Arlington Parks, Recreation and Culture department in creating engaging marketing materials, managing social media content, and developing creative campaigns to promote shelter pets and animal welfare initiatives. The intern will contribute to the department’s goals while gaining professional skills, networking opportunities, and a deeper understanding of local government services.This is a competitive 16-week, part-time internship (20 hours/week, Monday - Thursday) jointly offered by the University of Texas at Arlington and the City of Arlington. This program provided immersive, hands-on experience in municipal government operations, fostering professional development through real-world projects and exposure.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Develop marketing materials, including print and web content, to promote shelter programs and adoptable pets.
- Contribute to the department’s digital presence by creating, scheduling, and managing content across social media platforms.
- Assist in developing and executing creative marketing campaigns to increase community awareness and pet adoptions.
- Capture and edit photos and videos for use in promotional materials and online content.
- Collaborate with staff to ensure consistent branding and messaging.
- Assist with marketing and promotional support for special events.
- Participate in department meetings, training sessions, and interdepartmental collaborations.
- Conduct research relevant to departmental operations or programs.
- Engage with the public and stakeholders as needed for outreach, education, or service delivery.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Attend program-required orientation, check-ins, and professional development sessions.
- Provide feedback through 30%, 60%, and 90% program evaluations.
- Participate in occasional off-site outreach or adoption events as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of major social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube) and best practices for audience engagement.
- Knowledge of photo and video editing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar) preferred.
- Skill in communicating professionally and tactfully with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
- Skill in using Microsoft Office Suite; additional software skills may be required depending on department.
- Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to filing, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting body, typing, walking, and writing.
- Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to PC, telephone, calculator, scanner, and copier.
- Ability to prioritize deadlines and tasks.
- Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly.
- Ability to plan, organize, monitor, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish unit objectives.
- Ability to work within a set schedule.
