Under general supervision, this internship will support the assigned City of Arlington Parks, Recreation, and Culture Department in daily veterinary operations, animal husbandry, cleaning and sanitation, customer service, and general animal services. The intern will contribute to departmental goals while gaining valuable professional skills, networking opportunities, and a deeper understanding of local government services.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provide daily care for animals, including feeding, watering, and monitoring health and behavior.
- Assist with animal handling for medical exams, grooming, transport, and during veterinary procedures and treatments.
- Support the veterinary team with daily medical tasks, surgeries, and the preparation and maintenance of medical equipment and supplies.
- Perform cleaning and sanitation of kennels, animal housing areas, medical equipment, and public spaces to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
- Handle animals of all sizes and temperaments, including those that may be fearful or stressed, following established safety and welfare protocols.
- Support customer service activities by greeting visitors, answering questions, and providing information about adoptions and available services.
- Maintain accurate records related to animal care, medical treatments, and services provided.
- Participate in department meetings, training sessions, and interdepartmental collaborations.
- Conduct research relevant to departmental operations, programs, or service improvements.
- Engage with the public and stakeholders for outreach, education, and service delivery as needed.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Attend program-required orientation, check-ins, and professional development sessions.
- Assist with special events, community outreach, and volunteer activities as needed.
- Provide feedback through 30%, 60%, and 90% program evaluations.
- Participate in occasional off-site outreach or adoption events as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Ability to follow instructions and work with care and attention to detail.
- Skilled in handling animals of all sizes and temperaments, including those that may be fearful or stressed.
- Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to filing, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting body, typing, walking, and writing.
- Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to PC, telephone, calculator, scanner, and copier.
- Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly.
- Ability to plan, organize, monitor, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish unit objectives.
- Ability to work within a set schedule.
- Skill in using Microsoft Office Suite; additional software skills may be required depending on department.
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently under general instructions.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
