Scope:
The Senior Molding Engineer, Strategic Sourcing serves as a plastic molding/tooling technical resource on the Strategic Sourcing team, supporting engineering activities related to CooperSurgical’s global supply chain. This position interacts with all Cooper Surgical locations and departments as well as external suppliers worldwide.
Job Summary:
The Senior Molding Engineer, Strategic Sourcing is a technical resource for strategic or sustaining engineering projects. This role is responsible for providing technical leadership for supplied product changes, improvements, transfers, and other strategic sourcing initiatives. This role is focused primarily on plastics related tooling, materials, components, and assemblies, but will also work with other commodity types. The Senior Molding Engineer, Strategic Sourcing will partner with Global Category Managers to find innovative collaborative ways to reduce risk, achieve cost savings, and improve the supply chain. This role provides technical expertise in problem solving, design for manufacture, plastic molding processes & tool design, and will lead technical efforts. This role will leverage technical expertise for projects of moderate to high complexity.
Responsibilities
- Proactively identifies risk in the polymer/plastics supply chain and provides solutions to eliminate or significantly reduce risk while ensuring there are no gaps in supply for production.
Achieves program objectives regarding transfer and new startup of tooling/equipment at supplier locations
Leads mold/tooling design activities in coordination with suppliers, oversees supplier Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and ensures supplier validation of manufacturing cells is completed in accordance with engineering best practices and procedures.
Completes tooling & equipment repairs and replacements for Cooper Surgical assets located at suppliers worldwide.
Provides input to the CSI supplier asset (CSI owned tooling/equipment) replacement plan
Assists with the selection of highly qualified medical device material/component/assembly suppliers
Identify cost reduction opportunities in partnership with Category Managers, internal stakeholders and suppliers to meet year over year cost targets.
Identify insourcing and outsourcing opportunities in partnership with Category Managers and Operations manufacturing strategy; supports technical component in the make/buy analysis.
Provides recommendations for Design for Manufacture and Assembly for supplied components and assemblies.
Assists suppliers with manufacturing equipment and tooling capacity planning in alignment with long term plan and short-term changes in demand.
Identifies and maintains a world-class supply base for high quality SPI class 101, 102, & 103 injection mold tools.
Leads cross-functional teams to investigate and resolve complex supplier issues, engineering changes, etc.
Researches and understands raw materials used in manufacturing and makes recommendations for alternates.
Travel: Up to 30% domestically and internationally
Qualifications
Practical knowledge of plastic mold design/mold building, repair, and maintenance, including knowledge of machining tolerances, steels, heat treating, plating, and stack up tolerances.
Practical knowledge of Scientific Injection Molding concepts and experience with use.
Practical knowledge of medical device validation process, protocols/reports, conducting IQ, OQ, PQ
Ability to lead cross-functional teams to solve problems, using problem solving methods, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive action procedures
Proficient with design tools appropriate to discipline (SolidWorks, Molding simulation, GD&T, FMEA, engineering drawings and documentation).
Ability to manage projects of moderate to high complexity, build and maintain project schedules
Familiar with make vs. buy and product cost analysis
Superb oral and written communication skills including presentation skills
Computer Skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Smartsheet, PLM system, CAD (SolidWorks)
Work Environment:
- Works onsite at a CooperSurgical manufacturing location (Trumbull, CT or Stafford, TX). Travel up to 30% to supplier locations and other CooperSurgical sites.
- Interacts with domestic and international suppliers frequently
- Travels frequently domestically and internationally as needed to support business requirements
- Prolonged sitting in front of a computer
Experience:
10+ years industry experience in plastic injection molding manufacturing engineering and tooling
3+ years experience in medical device manufacturing/engineering or other highly regulated industry
3+ years experience in a supply chain engineer, supplier development engineer, or supplier quality engineer capacity, preferably in the medical device industry
Black Belt/Green Belt certification or Lean Six Sigma experience desired
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Plastics Engineering/Engineering Technology or equivalent required.
