GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, the Insurance Advisor assists with the administration of the municipality’s insurance program. The incumbent is responsible for the coordination of the claims function, which includes interacting with service providers and members of the general public to provide guidance on insurance coverage and claims.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate the claims process for the municipality, involving both internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide advice and guidance relating to insurance coverage and claims to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Assess risk in relation to specific enquiries for activities performed by municipal employees.
- Read and interpret adjustment letters, contracts, agreements, work orders and investigation reports.
- Maintain claims files by initiating, updating, and coordinating payment.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of files.
- Assist with additional branch projects when needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Broad knowledge of standards and best practices pertaining to insurance coverages within a municipal government framework.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage conflicting priorities while focusing on the timelines of internal and external customers.
- Ability to research complaints and provide timely solutions, liaising with other departments as required.
- Maintain a high degree of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to clarify and convey information in a clear and concise manner.
- Exercise confidentiality and discretion with client and/or municipal documents and information.
- Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with internal and external contacts, using judgement and sound decision-making skills, sometimes in conflict situations.
- Proficient in various Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- A Diploma in Insurance and Risk Management is required,
OR
- A Diploma in Business Administration supplemented by two additional insurance or risk management specific courses.
- Four (4) years’ experience working in the insurance industry, preferably in a municipal environment.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
- A valid Class five (5) Operator’s Licence is required as incumbent may be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use.
