We are a rapidly growing organization, committed to creating life-changing opportunities for over 23,000 students by 2025.

THE OPPORTUNITY

YES Prep needs dynamic Resident Principals with a robust set of experiences, to make our mission a reality. As a YES Prep employee, you will achieve jaw-dropping results, create pathways to opportunity for our students, and build transformative relationships.

To put it simply, with the growth of our organization and our schools, we need high performing talent at the Principal level to ensure we increase the number of students from underserved communities who graduate from college prepared to lead. This role will prepare you to be a Principal at a YES Prep Elementary or Secondary campus. Since we launched the Principal Pathway in 2018, 19 campuses are now led by a Principal who completed this program and 2 have transitioned into Home Office Roles this past summer. To date, 100% of Resident Principals that have persisted in the program for 1-2 years have been promoted to the Principal role.

THE ROLE

The Principal Residency develops leaders through a cohort model that focuses on:

  • Connecting data, relationships, ideas and people
  • Managing and implementing a vision through a team
  • Aligning decision making to vision, goals, values and focus areas
  • Deeply studying literature on equity, leadership, and instruction throughout residency
  • Learning by doing and experiencing school leadership firsthand
  • Creating a portfolio of resources that can be used once promoted to the Principal role

The Principal Residency consists of three interdependent parts.

1.     A campus assignment ensures Residents get daily 1:1 coaching and support from a high-performing, experienced Lead Principal for maximum exposure to learning and development of skills that are best learned in the context of a school setting. This experiential learning will serve to expose cohort members to the nuance and detail of the day-to-day Principal experience. Residents are also responsible for certain aspects of the school that will serve to bolster their development in areas they need to build more experience.

2.     Individualized development and coaching, not only from a Lead Principal, but also from the YES Prep Leadership Development team. Coaching provides the most customized experience for Resident Principals as the content of coaching conversations are co-created by the Resident Principal, the Lead Principal, and Managing Director of Leadership Development. Residents also attend regular professional development as a cohort and participate in quarterly campus site visits. Professional development provides Residents with technical skills in functions such as Talent, Operations, Finance, and Programs. This portion of the development program focuses on exposure and practice of processes Residents will be expected to perform once in the Principal role.

Residency Commitments:

  • Principal Residency leaders will participate in all required professional learning activities including Summer Induction, coaching sessions, and experiential learning opportunities.
  • All leaders will complete activities and requirements aligned to their learning within their current leadership roles. Examples include, but are not limited to, reflections, coaching preparation documents, assignments, etc.
  • All leaders will engage in coaching who will support his/her/their development as a leader, which could involve coaching conversations, observations in practice, reflection documents, and other coaching strategies to ensure active development and growth.
  • All leaders will execute assigned experiential learning activities, responsibilities and tasks as assigned. Leaders will be held accountable to tasks, responsibilities, and time on their visited campus.
  • All leaders are expected to represent the YES Prep core values to the best of their ability.
  • Additional requirements as assigned.

Professional Expectations:

  • Demonstrating behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible;
  • Participating in workshops, seminars, and conferences to enhance knowledge and skills;
  • Demonstrating knowledge and support of YES Prep Schools mission, values, standards, policies and procedures, confidentiality standards, Employee Handbook expectations and code of ethical behavior;
