Meet the team behind this journey
We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead one of two co-operating platform teams within the same unit, responsible for our internal developer platform. This role will be leading the team who primarily focus on providing the Kubernetes and Ceph clusters to our product development teams.
This team works closely with our in-house Data Center Operations team, who manage the in-house hardware, and our primary cloud provider, AWS. The other team within the same business unit manages the software services such as Redis, Postgres, Kafka, Grafana, etc. Both teams share an on-call ownership of these areas, so collaboration and broad knowledge of these areas is valuable
Your responsibilities
The core purpose of the Engineering Manager role is to develop their engineering team to an autonomous, high performing stage and take responsibility for ensuring high quality service delivery:
Delivery & Excellence: Collaborating with key stakeholders, representing what the platform currently can and will do, the team’s perspective on the feasibility, cost-effectiveness, scalability, and time-to-market aspects of new or existing services and products. Ensure timely delivery of new capabilities, maintain existing ones, and establish high engineering excellence metrics. Actively contribute to resolving technical issues and challenges by participating in tech reviews, system design discussions, and occasionally engaging in hands-on work to support team members. Support the team and participate in a humane on-call offering. Support and enable the team to effectively balance competing priorities between planned and unplanned work.
People Leadership: Inspire, develop, recruit, and motivate a platform engineering team. Conduct regular 1:1s with team members, set individual development or improvement plans, and foster a healthy, non-retaliatory feedback culture within the team.
Team Management: As a collaborative partner with a member of the Infrastructure Operations team, oversee the team’s strategy, quarterly goals, and business-technical metrics. Ensure the team's processes remain effective, actively participate in building and maintaining the technical roadmap, and take ownership of technical incident management. Dedicate time and resources to quality efforts, maintain a current knowledge base and documentation for the team's services and artifacts, and coordinate planning in collaboration with the Senior Engineering Manager and Craft Leads as needed.
Manage growth: You derive satisfaction from navigating change and collaboratively discovering innovative solutions with your team and various stakeholders within a dynamic and evolving environment.
Strategic Leadership: Co-develop and take ownership of the team's strategy, inline with broader objectives. Ensure and communicate the team's progress to stakeholders. Not directly involved in software delivery, the role necessitates a profound understanding of technical architecture, potential challenges, and aligning the team's work with broader organizational goals.
Qualities we look for
Track record of successfully leading and scaling a platform (/DevOps/Infrastructure/SRE) team.
High degree of hands-on technical experience in platform development and architecture, with several years of experience working as a senior engineer
You would enjoy a 30% share of hands-on technical work (code and architecture reviews, technical design, hands-on work, ...)
Experience in platform and system design
Expertise with Kubernetes - Cloud-managed and on-prem, ideally Ceph too
Experience with several of: AWS, on-prem, Terraform, ACK, ArgoCD, Harbor
You are a pragmatic problem solver who enjoys both the technical and non-technical challenges associated with the responsibilities of an Engineering Manager
Excellent communication skills in English with a strong sense of empathy and a solution-oriented mindset
Ability to identify tactical and strategic priorities and help navigate the team through a long request list to achieve long term objectives.
Don’t be put off if you meet most but not all of these areas - we’d still love to hear from you!
