We’re looking for a Fire Training Officer who will, as part of a four member training division, play a key role in delivering high-risk emergency training evolutions, including but not limited to:

  • Live fire training
  • High-angle rope rescue training
  • Confined space training
  • Hazardous materials response training

What will you be doing! 

  • Safely supervising high-risk emergency training evolutions, including but not limited to: live fire training, high-angle rope rescue training, confined space training, and hazardous materials response training.
  • Participating in updating, developing, and reviewing operational procedures.
  • Assisting in the evaluation of emergency operations and Post Incident Reviews to determine Department training requirements.
  • Conducting effective training courses and seminars for management, supervisory, and front-line Fire Department personnel.
  • Assisting in the development of training plans and specialized emergency training curriculum for the Department, ensuring that the method(s) indicated in the plan are consistently used and the stated learning outcomes are achieved.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of accurate and reliable training records documenting mandated training according to departmental and legal standards.
  • Administering the firefighter recruit program, including monitoring course completions and periodic testing.
  • Participating in the maintenance of the training equipment, training structures, and training grounds where training is conducted.
  • Attending additional training and obtaining certifications or levels of competency as directed by the Fire Chief.
  • Providing input into the short, medium, and long-term planning of department training and making recommendations for the budgeting process.
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate reports, records, and correspondence, along with summaries of the training activities.
  • Knowing and working in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL)’s Health & Safety Policy, and working in such a way as not to endanger oneself, fellow employees, or the public.
  • Overseeing all audiovisual equipment, teaching aids, training equipment/grounds, and demonstration devices generally employed in training programs.
  • Supervising students during training evolutions, ensuring applicable safety standards and practices are followed, and instructional goals are met.
  • Communicating effectively with an ability to work well within tight deadlines.
  • Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Training on results and assessments pertaining to firefighter training.
  • Participating in emergency preparedness exercises and drill programs.
  • Responding to emergencies as required by the CRL Fire Department.
  • Assisting Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) Fire Operations in meeting objectives and managing day-to-day operations as required.
  • Maintaining proficiency in the operation of all necessary technology to fulfill the job requirements.
  • Performing other tasks necessary to maintain the continuity of the Fire Department within the scope of the employee’s position.
  • Managing the activities of assigned staff, including emergency operations, staff training, assigning and reviewing assignments and daily workflow, and evaluating performance.
  • Supervising other instructors and students during high-hazard training, ensuring applicable safety standards and practices are followed and instructional goals are met.
  • Assisting in designing examinations to allow fair assessment of individual firefighters and to evaluate the effectiveness of the training program.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.   
     

What we are looking for:

  • Education 
    • Certification in First Aid, CPR, O2 and AED. 
    • Minimum NFPA 1001 Level I & II.
    • Minimum NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level I.
    • NFPA 472 Technician Level.
    • NFPA 1006 Technician Level.
    • SP 200 Forest Fire Suppression.
    • Certification in NFPA 1041 - Fire Service Instructor Level II.
    • Certification as an Incident Safety Officer, NFPA 1521.
    • Certified as a trainer for specialized areas of emergency response.
    • Certified as a trainer for selected company training programs.
  • Experience 
    • Minimum 8 years of Fire Suppression experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Knowledge of applicable NFPA standards and other standards related to training requirements for CRL Fire Operations.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products, specifically MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • Demonstrated ability to operate audiovisual equipment and demonstration devices.
    • Must possess a valid Class D Driver’s License with Z endorsement or equivalent.
    • Must pass an initial medical and physical evaluation and have an annual medical exam thereafter.
    • Knowledge of modern firefighting, related emergency services and the operation and routine maintenance of apparatus and equipment.
    • Ability to complete Company Wide mandatory training.
    • Extensive knowledge in the preparation of lesson plans, demonstrations, lectures, guide sheets, training aids and manuals.
    • Ability to effectively instruct a variety of subjects to students at all levels.
    • Considerable knowledge of adult learning principles.
    • Knowledge of nuclear industry standards for developing and implementing training programs.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.” 
       

Working Conditions:  

  •  We have a compressed work week, which consists of a four-day, ten hours a day work schedule.

This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee.
