Pay: $42,000-46,000 annually

InterVarsity Press is looking for a qualified person to join the Content Production Team (CPT) in the Editorial department, which manages and executes design tasks for the production of book interior pages and ebooks. The CPT works closely with both the Editorial and Production teams throughout the book and ebook production process to ensure that files meet high-quality standards and are delivered for publication on time. The CPT prepares assets, processes images, creates figures, communicates and shares files with vendors, contributes to ebook production, and more.
This role focuses on entry-level book interior design and has an emphasis on ebooks. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite / Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat) and some knowledge of CSS and HTML/XHTML/XML (for working on ebooks) is required. File management, excellent communication and process skills, and maintaining file hygiene are a must. The growth path for this role would be toward doing more complicated book interior design projects, becoming the Editorial ebook specialist, and collaborating across departments.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Contribute to Book Interior Design by:
- Designing book interiors based on cover design and editorial guidance, meeting due dates.
- Researching, acquiring, and editing imagery as required.
- Working closely with the managing editor and editors, refining sample designs for approval.
- Upon approval, preparing and delivering well-built files for page composition and ebook conversion.
- Maintaining and updating page composition templates.
- Checking first and final composed pages for quality assurance and adherence to the approved design.
Contribute to Page Composition of Print Books by:
- Composing pages through multiple correction cycles, with attention to the approved design and current typographic standards/protocols, while meeting due dates.
- Formatting and tagging content in preparation for ebook conversion.
- Researching, acquiring, modifying, and creating diagrams, tables, charts and illustrations as needed.
- Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues as necessary.
- Maintaining electronic file archives and book templates.
Contribute to Ebook Production and Conversions by:
- Preparing print files for export to required formats per latest protocols and procedures and sending to vendor.
- Managing the ebook proofreading (“function check”) process, including assigning checks to freelancers and coordinating the rounds of ebook corrections with outside vendor.
- Running validation tools and delivering final files for electronic distribution.
- Assisting as needed with any complicated or extensive ebook fixes or updates, serving as a liaison to the IT department and the Sales team.
- Assisting with special long-term ebook projects as assigned.
- Managing and maintaining CSS template and styles.
Assure Quality Work from Outside Vendors by:
- Preparing and delivering files and instructions to vendor for page composition and ebook conversion.
- Reviewing vendor-composed pages.
Support General Operations of the Team by:
- Following books through all stages, including first set, corrections, digital conversion, final checks.
- Filling electronic file requests for website, marketing department, and outside publishing uses.
- Processing reprint corrections for both print and digital files.
- Applying established standards in the consistent naming, organization, and processing of files.
- Investigating and troubleshooting production issues, resolving problems expediently, and seeking help if necessary.
- Staying current with industry trends through reading, seminars, conferences, and training as needed.
- Maintaining daily time record.
- Being available to utilize design and production for projects outside the realm of book production such as in-house publication design, presentations, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

· Effective oral and written communication skills
· InDesign expertise
· Knowledge of Mac OS
· Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite / Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat)
· Knowledge of CSS and HTML/XHTML/XML (for working on ebooks)
· Relentless attention to detail and accuracy, including file organization
· Proven initiative for staying updated on relevant software tools and industry practices
· Excellent time management skills and proven ability to balance multiple projects and deadlines
· Good judgment and ability to work independently
· Proven ability to work well with external vendors and customers
· Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills
· Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and proofreader marks
· Ability to learn quickly, work efficiently, and meet deadlines
· Significant aptitude with Microsoft Word, including expertise in styles and troubleshooting files imported into InDesign

· Flexibility to attend the Urbana Student Missions Conference every six years, Dec. 26-Jan.1, and National Staff Conference every three years (the year after Urbana), approximately Jan. 2-7

RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS BY LEVEL

Content Production Coordinator – Level 4, non-exempt
The Content Production Coordinator will be primarily focused on more limited execution of the above defined tasks for the Content Production team. The Content Production Coordinator will have experience working with Adobe Creative Suite.
Associate Content Production Specialist - Level 5, exempt
The Associate Content Production Specialist will be responsible for the above listed responsibilities and will have at least two to three years of experience working with Adobe Creative Suite and page layout. This position includes both print and ebook focused responsibilities.
Content Production Specialist – Level 6, exempt
The Content Production Specialist will be responsible for all of the above responsibilities and will have at least five years of experience working with Adobe Creative Suite and page layout, with substantive experience in graphic design and/or ebook editing programs. They will have greater involvement in leading and overseeing design/production processes, managing the flow of projects between teams, and training teammates.
Senior Content Production Specialist - Level 7, exempt
The Senior Content Production Specialist will be responsible for all of the above responsibilities and will have at least ten years of experience working with Adobe Creative Suite and page layout, with substantive experience in graphic design and advanced abilities such as working with legacy versions of Creative Suite, and/or with FrameMaker, JavaScript, and AppleScript. They will have greater involvement in leading and overseeing design/production processes, managing the flow of projects between teems, training teammates, and they will be a leader in researching best practices, interacting with outside sources to meet changing needs, and implementing new technology and processes.
