Selective Insurance is looking for an AVP to lead a group of standards lines general liability claims professionals handling both litigated and non-litigated claims. This position will be located in one of our regional offices or remote.
All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements, in accordance with Company claim policies, practices, and procedures, and within delegated authority.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the management of a claims unit primarily handling litigated and non-litigated standard lines general liability claims; driving optimum claims outcomes, supporting operational goals and business objectives while delivering superior customer service to our policyholders and agents, all in support of our commitments to our stakeholders.
- Strategically position the unit to perform at best-in-class level, achieving best possible claims outcomes, in the shortest possible time, while executing outstanding experience for internal and external customers.
- Plan, control and coordinate claims activity and workflow within claims unit/department to maintain high professional customer service and technical standards, and to ensure work is produced in a timely fashion and that all deadlines are met.
- Set and communicate goals and expectations.
- Ensures quality, service, and cycle time standards that achieve excellent claim outcomes.
- Establish accurate and timely reporting capabilities.
- Identify key metrics and surface insights that accelerate data-driven decisions.
- Effectively monitor and manage expenses associated with claims resolution by ensuring appropriate usage of vendors and holding team accountable to productivity and timely disposition standards.
- Assess current state of unit and identify opportunities for performance improvement.
- Partner proactively with Underwriting, Actuarial, and Operations on strategic matters related to claims.
- Challenge thinking and the status quo while maintaining an upstanding culture.
- Meet regularly with underwriting, actuarial, legal, and field offices to discuss general liability trends and observations.
- Coach, mentor, and support continual professional development of staff. Recommends appropriate skill development to ensure optimum contribution of team to achieve company results. Cultivate a succession pipeline.
- Ensure the timely settlement of claims and maintain acceptable closing ratios for the department.
- Prepare operating budget for unit/department and monitor and control expenses.
- Recommends claim procedural changes and plans, organizes and implements these changes in accordance with company guidelines. Keeps current on all changes affecting work production.
- Maintain override capability, authorize settlements up to designated authority limits, and submit recommendations to designated officials for those claims in excess of authority level.
- Oversee combined loss ratio and productivity numbers and ensure they are in compliance with company standards.
- Provide performance management activities for personnel measured against business objectives and claims activity.
- Plan and conduct claims reviews and settlement conferences.
- Mediate complaints and disputes regarding claim resolution.
- Travel represents approximately 25% of employee’s time. A valid driver’s license is required.
Qualifications:
Knowledge and Requirements
- Experience managing a team of 30 or more.
- Mult- jurisdictional understanding of legal issues related to general liability policies, a broad range of general liability claim types, coverage, good faith claim handling, demands within policy limits, additional insured liability, contractual indemnity, litigation management, attorney management, trial preparation and similar matters.
- Ability to design organizational structures that improve efficiency and outcomes.
- Ability to lead a team of general liability claims managers and adjusters across a broad spectrum of complex general liability issues, litigation and high exposures.
- Strong reserving strategies, processes, and acumen, especially when dealing with uncertainty.
- Exceptional culture, people, and management skills.
- Ability to analyze reports and trend analysis to identify issues
- Experience in complex coverage analysis and significant large loss evaluations, loss allocations; superior communication, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills; and excellent presentation skills.
- Moderate proficiency with standard business-related software including Microsoft Outlook, Work Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Sufficient keyboarding proficiency to enter data accurately and efficiently.
Education and Experience
- Legal degree preferred, but not required.
- College degree required.
- 12+ years claims experience
- 7+ year’s claims supervisory experience.
