JOB TITLE: Advocate, Nutrition
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Healthy Food Program Enrollment and Support Supervisor, the Nutrition Advocate recruits, trains, and enrolls new child care providers in the Healthy Food Program. Conducts home visits to train, enroll and monitor providers to ensure compliance with all aspects of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and support providers in their work linking them to other resources.
This incumbent will be expected to promote and adhere to the workplace core capabilities of: accountability, customer focus, continuous quality improvement (CQI), communication, competent people and clear priorities. All work to be completed with minimum supervision and in accordance with organizational standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following. The company reserves the right to add to, delete, change, or modify the essential duties and responsibilities at any time.
- Work independently to prioritize, prepare, and implement a weekly schedule in order to monitor and review family child care homes that are enrolled in the CACFP.
- Conduct one home visit per provider, per participating trimester as applicable.
- Conduct home visits on evenings and/or weekends.
- Conduct three home reviews throughout the federal fiscal year, at least two of which must be unannounced. Moreover, of the three home reviews, at least two must be in observation of a meal service, and one of those two must be unannounced.
- Conduct home reviews for the CACFP.
- Observe and document meal components; evaluate whether meal components, food preparation areas, and serving sizes meet United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requirements.
- Observe and document child attendance for the specific meal being reviewed.
- Disallow meals that do not meet USDA guidelines as necessary.
- Confirm that the child care provider has all documents required by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and USDA; if the provider does not have all required documents, assure that the provider receives the necessary documents.
- Review monthly paper or online menus and attendance in order to train the provider on USDA creditable components and overall better nutrition.
- Provide training on various diet and nutrition topics.
- Reconcile attendance on the day of the visit with previous attendance patterns.
- Offer technical assistance as needed.
- Write concise notes regarding home review.
- Issue corrective actions when necessary, as outlined by USDA requirements.
- Follow the CACFP guidelines and IAFC internal procedures for the corrective action process. Inform providers of any deficiencies and train to ensure correction of seriously deficient conditions.
- Enter and maintain home review and/or provider information in Minute Menu database.
- Build relationships with providers by engaging in an open and understanding manner, taking into account each provider’s unique situation and circumstances.
- Use personal judgment to formulate the best approach to train or guide providers to a better understanding of nutrition, as well as to how be to in compliance with the CACFP.
- Serve as a resource for providers assisting them in understanding other programs at Illinois Action for Children and/or introducing them to outside resources available in the community.
- Organize and implement CACFP trainings and workshops for providers.
- Organize and implement outreach activities to provide program information to providers and/or community organizations.
- Conduct Healthy Food Program presentations for IAFC staff.

- Other functions: the organization may assign other functions to the job at its discretion.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Associate's degree or 60 college credit hours and six months to one year related experience and/or training.
