Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Senior Human Resources Generalist serves as a trusted advisor and partner to leadership, managers, and employees on workplace matters. This role is responsible for fostering a positive, productive, fair, and compliant work environment by managing employee relations programs, investigating workplace concerns, ensuring compliance with employment laws, and coaching managers on effective performance management and conflict resolution. They will address and resolve conflicts and disputes through appropriate methods, to include training and mediation. The Senior Human Resources Generalist will also assist with the administration, tracking, and reconciliation of employee benefits.
Essential Responsibilities
Employee Relations & Investigations
- Lead the employee relations function, ensuring fair, consistent, and legally compliant practices.
- Conduct thorough and timely investigations into employee concerns, complaints, and policy violations.
- Maintain and organize all documentation related to employee complaints and workplace investigations.
- Ensure follow up and response to all parties involved in issues.
- Document findings and determine corrective or disciplinary actions in partnership with department leadership, HR leadership, and legal counsel if needed.
- Partner with department managers for employee separation review, process, paperwork, communication, etc.
- Process unemployment verifications and gather documents to submit for claims, respond to claims represent the agency.
Manager & Employee Coaching
- Provide coaching and guidance to managers on handling performance management, disciplinary actions, and conflict resolution.
- Review disciplinary documents for accuracy and other suggested additions or edits.
- Work with department management and leadership in determining resolution for issues.
- Advise employees on workplace concerns, policies, and procedures, serving as a neutral and confidential resource.
Policy & Compliance
- Provide support for policy development, and interpret and enforce workplace policies to ensure alignment with federal, state, and local employment laws.
- Stay current on labor and employment law changes and proactively update practices and policies.
- Partner with HR leadership to ensure organizational compliance with workplace regulations.
Benefits Administration & Reconciliation
- Complete monthly benefits reconciliation to ensure enrollment records, carrier invoices, and payroll deductions align accurately.
- Review monthly invoices, prepare billing and payment requests.
- Partner with payroll and finance teams to resolve discrepancies and maintain compliance with benefits policies and regulations.
Training and Engagement
- Support initiatives to strengthen organizational culture, employee morale, and retention.
- Recommend proactive strategies to minimize workplace issues and promote positive employee experiences.
- Review needs, make recommendations, and support preparation and delivery of relevant employee and manager training.
- Ensure completion of required training, and maintain records.
Reporting, Data & Metrics
- Track and analyze employee relations trends, identifying areas of concern and recommending systemic solutions.
- Send and review employee exit interview surveys. Compile and analyze data to make recommendations.
- Prepare reports and provide insights to HR leadership and executive management.
- Ensure regular review of HRIS information and benefits carrier integrations for accuracy and completeness.
- Ensure personnel actions are properly entered into HRIS and maintained in the personnel file.
- Complete data and/or program audits within areas of responsibility, records, reports, and logs to conform to regulations. Prepare reports and conduct research as requested and/or as necessary.
General
- Cross train in areas of recruitment and benefits and support those areas if needed. Serve as back up to needed HR functions.
- Support and participate in Human Resources team functions such as HR-sponsored employee events, new-hire orientations, Human Resources training programs, and other activities as required.
- Protect all confidential information, company property and electronic data. Comply with safety rules.
- Other related duties as necessary and/or as directed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local personnel and labor laws.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate with coworkers across all levels of the agency.
- High integrity with strict adherence to maintenance of confidentiality, especially employee information and records.
- Ability to handle multiple projects and respond to frequently changing priorities based on the needs of employees and/or the agency. Ability to prioritize work and meet necessary deadlines.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, conflict resolution skills and organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
- Sound judgment with ability to work autonomously.
- Proficiency in computers and software including Microsoft Office and web-based HRIS.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in Human Resources or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Four years’ experience in Human Resources in all areas; employee relations, conflict resolution, benefits administration
- SHRM CP preferred.
- Flexible schedule to work after hours and weekends, as necessary.
Physical Requirements
- Primarily works in office environment but will also work throughout the agency and off site.
- Ability to communicate with management, employees and co-workers.
- Ability to operate and use office equipment, especially computer, keyboard and mouse. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or touch.
- Ability to continuously sit and/or stand. Ability to reach with hands and arms. Ability to climb stairs as needed.
- May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
