The University of Miami, a globally recognized leader in research and innovation, is seeking a skilled and motivated Sr. Software Engineer to join its dynamic research team. This role supports high-impact, interdisciplinary research initiatives by applying advanced data science techniques to solve complex problems across diverse domains—including cybersecurity.

CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Sr. Software Engineer is a subject matter expert at using large data sets to find opportunities for product and process optimization, using models to test the effectiveness of different courses of action. In addition, the Sr. Software Engineer uses a variety of data mining and analysis methods, using a range of data tools, building and implementing models, using and creating algorithms and creating and running simulations. Moreover, the Sr. Software Engineer provides recommendations to drive business results with data-based insights and influences a wide range of stakeholders and functional teams.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Executes and contributes to cutting-edge research projects in data analytics, with a focus on analytic automation, machine learning, predictive modeling, or large-scale data processing.
  • Mentors and supports cybersecurity research team members in applying data analytics methodologies to ongoing projects.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and external stakeholders to design and implement data-driven solutions.
  • Engages in collaborative research efforts with university departments, industry partners, and global research networks.
  • Works closely with faculty, research collaborators, and external partners to drive data-driven discovery and innovation.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders throughout the organization to identify opportunities for leveraging company data to drive business solutions.
  • Leads the development of a state-of-the-art data portal for the storage, management and analysis of multidimensional and diverse datasets.
  • Leads the development of pipelines and workflows for the integration of publicly available datasets with the developed infrastructure.
  • Performs active project management to develop the Data Portal and other tools, coordinating the timely implementation of user requirements, technical specifications and user feedback.
  • Leverage state-of-the-art big data and AI approaches and develop computational algorithms and workflows for the identification of novel targets and the prioritization of efficacious drug combinations.
  • Mines and analyzes data from company databases to drive optimization and improvement of product development, marketing techniques and business strategies.
  • Leads the assessment of effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques. Develops custom data models and algorithms to apply to data sets.
  • Use predictive modeling to increase and optimize customer experiences, operational efficiencies, and other business outcomes.
  • Leads different functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes.
  • Develops processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field.

Certification and Licensing:

Cybersecurity certification is highly preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in applied data science, analytics, software engineering or research settings. Highly preferred experience: in cybersecurity-related analytics or data-driven security research. Knowledge of cloud computing platforms, big data technologies, or real-time data processing systems. Track record of contributing to research and innovation projects. Any appropriate combination of relevant education/or work experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Proficiency in statistical modeling, machine learning, and data visualization techniques.
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, R, SQL) and familiarity with relevant data tools and frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary research environments.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Skill in collecting, organizing and analyzing data.
  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office).
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
