GENERAL DESCRIPTION 

The Assistant Director of Student Engagement works directly with the Associate Dean and Director of Campus Life to facilitate the operations of student programming, provide support to Student Senate and various student clubs and organizations, and assist with other Campus Life programs and services as needed. This position provides direction and support for several Campus Life programs which facilitate student engagement, campus involvement, and student leadership.  This is a live-on position, will participate in the on-call duty schedule on a rotating basis, and respond to crises when appropriate.

The Assistant Director is expected to take an active role in the continued development of the Campus Life department. They should be a visible and approachable campus presence, committed to working with students on creating a vibrant co-curricular experience, and supportive of the varying needs of the diverse campus community. The person in this role must be a student advocate, self-starter, open-minded, innovative, conscious of Pitzer’s core values, caring of student mental health, and committed to social justice. They should be interested in working on a student-driven campus that has a strong student voice in all levels of the college governance and campus-life.
                                                           

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

When duties and responsibilities change and develop, Pitzer College will review this job description and make changes of business necessity.

  • Oversee Campus Life Student Engagement development and programs to foster community and belonging among all students. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Leading Student Engagement team of 10 student leaders; facilitating on-going team meetings; developing and assessing leader goals and learning
    • Executing consistent and meaningful campus-wide programming for the general student body
    • Collaborating with various campus departments (i.e. Strive2Thrive, Writing Center, CAPAS, OSA, ResLife, Athletics, Facilities, Advancement, etc.) to create opportunities for engagement and connection
    • Assessing current campus and community needs to create programming that addresses gaps so all students are included (i.e. Fall Break, Spring Break, study and mental health breaks, etc.) 
    • Liaising with campus partners and student groups to coordinate and support programs and  initiatives to support the diverse needs and experiences of all Pitzer students.

  • Develop and maintain student leadership development for all Pitzer student organizations and Campus Life student leaders.  This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Training, facilitating, and assessing Campus Life student leader learning and growth
    • Serving as the Campus Life liaison to Student Senate’s Vice President of Student Engagement (VPSE) to develop processes for student organizations, including student organization registration process, leadership training, budget management, and other leadership needs
    • Meeting regularly with Pitzer student organization leadership teams, understanding the unique goals and needs of each group, and advising leaders on navigating group dynamics and leadership development
    • Serving as the Identity Board staff co-advisor in collaboration with Student Success Initiatives
    • Providing logistical and operational support for larger Pitzer student organization programming and needs, including budget tracking and management, event planning support, etc.
    • Facilitating other general student trainings as needed

  • Manage general campus programming events and initiatives. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Serving as the staff advisor to the Pitzer Events Board; attending regular meetings and providing guidance as needed
    • Advising Pitzer’s student-sponsored 5C events and music festival planning committees
    • Working with student organizations and programming bodies to understanding Pitzer processes and holding event registrants accountable, managing the potential for risk
    • Providing supervision for evening and weekend events, which may include responding to emergencies and coordinating with campus partners and event planners to address urgent needs
    • Serving on the 5C Student Activities committee to coordinate across the Claremont Consortium as a Pitzer representative; manage 5C event calendaring for Pitzer, bridge student event coordinators with college and 5C processes, work with 5C colleagues to refine event processes
    • Serving as a Campus Life and Student Affairs representative on the Teaching, Learning, and Campus Life Committee

  • Provide other general Campus Life and campus-wide programming support. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Assisting with New Student Orientation programming implementation and planning
    • Understanding the Engage platform (event and club management system) to ensure student use and compliance
    • Campus-wide events, initiatives, and campaigns as needed.

  • Perform on-call duty coverage on a rotating basis and serve on the summer on-call duty rotation. This includes, but is not limited to
    • Responding to student crises and providing immediate solutions to ensure student health and safety after-hours
    • Serving as responsible employee for Title IX and Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) for the Clery Act
    • Serving as a member of the CARE team to coordinate ongoing support for students in need

  • Perform other related duties as required.

Basic Qualification: Must have a master’s degree in student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or equivalent. Must have three to four years of professional experience in campus programming, residence life, or a related area of Student Affairs. Two years of part-time experience while enrolled in a graduate program may count towards up to two years of professional experience. Must have demonstrated experience with event planning.

  • Must have access to reliable and secure computer and internet connection. Must maintain password protection for work files and records and ensure that no one else has access to password and login credentials at remote work site.
  • Must have access to a dedicated and suitable workstation at remote location, including desk or table and supporting, upright chair. Must ensure workstation is safe and free from hazards.

Licenses/Certifications: Must have a valid California’s driver’s license, transportation, and a driving record acceptable to the college’s automobile insurer.

Supervisory Responsibility: Supervise approximately 10 Campus Life Student Engagement Assistants; including selecting, training, and supervising student staff; budget management; and event implementation.

Time Type:

Full-time 40 hours per week

Annual Pay Schedule: 12

Work Schedule: This is a full-time position requiring regular weeknight meetings with students and additional night and weekend work. The regular hours for this position are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, but these will vary based on the needs of the department. Will participate in the on-call rotation.  

Work Model:  Hybrid (4 days in office, 1 day remote)

Compensation: Budgeted pay range: $68,000-$70,304 per year.

The salary for the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

Physical Requirements: This is a somewhat active position. Must be able to:

  • Sit for prolonged periods of time;
  • Operate a computer for prolonged periods of time;
  • Communicate with others by email, in person and over the telephone;
  • Read printed materials and a computer screen;
  • Have the mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment;
  • Assist with the set-up, staffing and clean-up of events (e.g. tables, signage, supplies, boxes, etc.)
  • Grasping, pulling, pushing, stooping, bending, and twisting;
  • Climbing step ladders, reaching out and overhead;
  • Lift 20 pounds from the ground to waist level unassisted;
  • Must be able to drive and transport students in motorized vehicles or electric utility carts as needed;
  • Have the stamina to manage a high-volume workload in a fast-paced work environment;
  • Have the stamina to work occasional evenings and weekends and
  • Must be able to perform the tasks listed below (based on a typical week):
