General Summary
Oceana’s Field Team generates grassroots support for Oceana’s U.S. campaigns by working in strategic states to reduce plastic pollution, prevent the expansion of offshore oil and gas drilling, protect the North Atlantic right whale, promote responsible fishing practices, and defend core environmental laws like the Magnuson-Stevens Act. Field staff build support for our plastics campaign at the local and state level and build on our winning model to stop the expansion of offshore oil and gas drilling activities by engaging municipalities and business leaders. Field staff build support for Oceana’s other campaigns over time/as needed.
The Field Director oversees the entire U.S. field team, ensuring that it delivers grassroots and grasstops engagement to support Oceana’s campaigns. This position reports to the Vice President of the USA. The Field Director develops and executes campaign strategy for the field team in coordination with the campaign directors, integrates field staff within campaign teams, and manages and supports field staff to meet campaign goals and objectives. Field staff manage a varied and high-volume workload; this position requires initiative and an ability to work on individual deadlines tasks while also engaging fully as part of a dynamic and high-performing team. Travel and in-person work is required.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Direct and manage a remote team of 10+ field representatives on both the East and West Coast, and coordinate with the campaign directors, advocates, communications professionals, scientists, lawyers, and other departments to achieve campaign goals.
- Lead the professional development and goal setting process for a remote team of 10+ field representatives, with an emphasis on growth and skills development, including but not limited to engaging in the annual goal setting and review process with all direct reports
- Lead the achievement of annual and shorter-term goals across multiple issue areas, including Oceana’s campaigns to fight plastic pollution, stop the expansion of offshore drilling and exploration, save the North Atlantic right whale and defend core conservation laws like the Magnuson Stevens Act from regulatory and Congressional rollbacks.
- Lead the development and implementation of an annual plan for Oceana’s grassroots/field efforts and revise it as necessary throughout the year.
- Develop advocacy, communications, and grassroots outreach strategies with field staff to achieve the campaigns’ goals and report on results throughout the year.
- Support the implementation of inclusive, strategic, and effective organizing tactics, including but not limited to grassroots coalition building, public engagement and repeat volunteerism, legislative advocacy, traditional and social media acquisition, and developing a self-sustaining foundation of support for Oceana’s campaign goals.
- Monitor, approve, and enforce timely and accurate timekeeping, expense reports, and reporting on deliverables/field activities in Salesforce.
- Recruit, hire, and train new staff as needed.
- Assist in developing campaign messages, strategies, and materials.
- Manage outside relationships with partners, decision-makers, and vendors as needed.
Job Requirements
Education and experience:
- A bachelor’s degree and ten years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least five years of management experience.
- Experience in planning and executing in-person and virtual events and using video conferencing/phone, email, and social media to engage large numbers of supporters.
- Professional training in organizing and executing campaign strategy.
- Experience completing projects under tight deadlines and effectively managing a demanding workload, multi-tasking and taking on new projects, and the capability to effectively lead a diverse team of remote staff.
- Desire and ability to advocate for complex, aggressive conservation positions in both small and large settings.
Skills and knowledge:
- Exceptional management skills with proven ability to lead professional, successful staff and ability to lead and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- Strong writing ability and excellent written, oral, and emotional communication skills, including public speaking.
- Keen analytical ability and strategic thinking skills.
- Demonstrated initiative to work with communities who are typically underrepresented in the environmental and oceans space, and commitment to incorporating the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion into organizing and advocacy work.
- Computer literacy with Microsoft Office applications and proficiency with Salesforce.com (or equivalent CRM).
- Familiarity with campaign issues, including but not limited to plastic pollution, offshore drilling, and fisheries management is a plus.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license, or ability to travel efficiently via public transit and ride share.
- Willingness to travel and shift schedule to accommodate work on weekends and after normal working hours.

The salary range for this position is $115,000 to $135,000 annually.

Oceana’s U.S. offices have operated on a hybrid schedule and staff have been required to work from their assigned office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. With agreement between the employee and their supervisor, the employee may work remotely Monday and Friday.
