Position Summary
The System Administrator is responsible for installing, administering, and maintaining on-premises and cloud servers, collaboration tools, directory services, and identity management systems. This role manages key infrastructure components, including Windows Server, Windows Hyper-V, Azure compute services, Microsoft O365 suite, Active Directory, Entra ID, OneLogin, and Tray.AI. The System Administrator will perform system updates according to established policies and procedures. They will answer and respond to helpdesk tickets and will provide support to both staff and residents. The System Administrator will be responsible for the overall on/offboarding processes and will ensure that directory services are integrated across appropriate systems. They will develop and implement Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity (DR/BCP) plans for systems of responsibility.
Position Requirements
· Proven experience administering Windows Server environments, including physical servers, Hyper-V hosts, and virtual machines, Active Directory, Group Policy Objects (GPO), DHCP, and DNS.
· Proven experience administering Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Entra ID, Teams, Exchange, SharePoint, Intune, Defender, and Forms.
· Proven experience with email system configuration and management, including SPF, DKIM, threat detection and remediation, mail transport rules, and message trace analysis.
· Experience with backup and recovery systems.
· Experience with PowerShell scripting.
· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, a related field or equivalent professional experience is preferred.
· Relevant certifications for Microsoft 365 are preferred.
· Experience with Linux servers is preferred.
· Excellent problem-solving abilities.
· Ability to communicate well in oral or written form and to convey technical information to audiences with varying levels of technical understanding.
· Demonstrated ability to plan and lead technical projects to achieve departmental goals.
· Ability to support critical systems after hours and participate in on-call rotation.
Schedule:
Mon – Fri 8 am – 5 pm.
Weekends/nights as needed to support projects, conduct maintenance work, or resolve critical issues.
Participates in an on-call rotation.
Essential Functions
1. Server Administration
a. Plan, install, configure, and maintain on-premises and cloud computing environments.
b. Ensure that system updates and security patches are applied according to policy.
c. Proactively manage systems to ensure minimal downtime and high availability.
d. Develop DR/BCP processes to ensure recoverability from system issues.
2. Directory services and Identity Management
a. Install, configure, and maintain directory services.
b. Manage and maintain the automated provisioning systems. Develop coded workflows to meet new business requirements.
c. Manage the single sign-on (SSO) system and the application integrations.
d. Synchronize directory information for users across all appropriate systems.
e. Manage the onboarding/offboarding process to ensure accounts are created and removed according to policy.
3. Microsoft O365 Administration
a. Configure and maintain O365 applications and services.
b. Work with the organization to increase adoption and utilization of O365 applications.
c. Utilize O365 features to increase the baseline Microsoft Secure Score level.
d. Monitor and maintain backup and recovery processes.
4. Technical Support
a. Provide end-user support for IT systems to staff and residents.
b. Provide second-level and escalated support to IT staff within areas of responsibility.
c. Utilize technical skills to investigate and solve complex problems.
d. Conduct after-hour maintenance activities to minimize impact on users.
e. Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to critical issues.
5. Planning and budgeting
a. Provide budget requests to the Director of Information Technology.
b. Develop project plans, requirements, and timelines and present them for review.
c. Manage approved projects alone or in conjunction with other IT staff.
d. Provide input into developing the IT roadmap and hardware lifecycle plan.
6. Professional Development
a. Complete the required HR training programs.
b. Participate in industry webinars, certification programs, workshops, and training to stay current with technology trends.
c. Contribute to developing IT policies and procedures to ensure efficient and effective IT administration and security.
7. Teamwork
a. Support other team members and strive to develop good working relationships.
b. Collaborate to solve IT problems and improve the technical environment and processes.
c. Participate in IT retreats and planning sessions.
8. General
a. Comply with all VMRC and departmental policies & guidelines conscientiously.
