The Strong offers programs for individuals of all ages to learn about the power and importance of play in their lives. The G2 site coordinator is responsible for program coordination at a specific G2 location and general administrative tasks relating to the planning and execution of the program from September through June. This 10-month position coordinates child-centered school-based play programs that celebrate diversity, inclusion, and exploration at every age. There are no job duties expected for the months of July and August. 

This position requires a highly organized individual who is passionate about strengthening young children’s social and emotional development through child-directed play and empowering adults to understand and connect with children. The site coordinator may oversee between two and eight play sessions per week. Once scheduled, G2 sessions occur on the same day and at the same time each week, and each session will require approximately four hours of the coordinator’s time per week.

All museum staff are expected to cooperate with one another in furthering the museum’s general objectives and in completing museum projects. Similarly, all staff consistently maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude, act with integrity and in accordance with the highest ethical standards, and demonstrate a loyalty to the museum in all public contacts. Essential Functions:

  • Under the direction of the Director G2, prepare for and supervise play sessions for K-2 students and volunteers from September through June. Be present during all meetings between the children and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and program volunteers to maintain a safe and inviting environment. Set up the G2 space for in-school sessions.
  • Cooperate with the Director G2 to ensure the successful implementation of the program at each site. 
  • Confirm finalized school schedules and program space.
  • Manage program materials and supplies. Assist with the inventory of supplies for suitcases provided to each volunteer. Notify the G2 Director when additional materials are needed.
  • Maintain a clear and consistent line of communication with program volunteers and staff and school administrators and parents.
  • Prepare for site visits with guests from the local community by regularly communicating with school personnel and providing all visitors with basic guidelines for site observation.
  • Plan and oversee the return of program volunteers in September.
  • Support and contribute to the recruitment of new volunteers, as needed.
  • Assist with facilitating the orientation of volunteers in the fall.
  • Substitute for other site coordinators or volunteers as necessary.
  • Set up journals for volunteers assigned to site to record weekly comments about their G2 experience.
  • Facilitate post-play discussions.
  • Manage and read journals after each session to track child-volunteer relationship development, evaluation, feedback, and other concerns.
  • Ensure that journals remain accessible to parents, teachers, and school administrators.
  • Provide ongoing day-to-day support for volunteers and review their performance with the Director of G2.
  • Comply with New York State requirements for mandated reporters.
  • Participate in school events such as open houses and community engagement team meetings.
  • Attend and assist with in-service programs for assigned G2 site.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The candidate may have any combination of education and experience but should possess the required skills and knowledge for successful performance. Our general minimum requirements are:

  • Some college coursework is required; coursework in education, social or human services, child development, or related field is desirable.
  • Experience working with children and adults, preferably in a learning environment.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills and ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with program staff, volunteers, parents, teachers, and school administrators.
  • High level of organization and attention to detail.
  • Program Evaluation:  Skilled in data tracking, recordkeeping, identifying measures or indicators of program success and the actions needed to improve or correct execution, relative to the goals of the institution.
  • Public Speaking:  Enthusiastic presentation and public speaking skills and comfort engaging with diverse audiences. 
  • Collaboration:  We work in a team-oriented environment, so it is vital that our employees maintain effective interpersonal relationships. Team members must be good at active listening, conflict management, cooperation, facilitation, negotiation, and be open to feedback.
  • Communication:  Our employees should always communicate and act in a respectful manner when working with others, including those from outside the museum. The ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion and to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure is vital for this position. This job requires the ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form using the English language.
  • Problem-Solving:  Things don’t always go as planned. This job requires the ability to understand and follow instructions while recognizing, analyzing, and solving a variety of problems. The site coordinator must exercise sound judgment when making decisions.
  • Computer Proficiency:  This position requires work on a computer, in databases, and with related equipment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word), various document processing applications, and internet search engines is desired.

These qualifications are considered a plus:

  • Bilingual written and verbal skills.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Experience working in a leadership or supervisory capacity in an afterschool, day camp, or community youth outreach setting.
