Rainy River Mine
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit and underground, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. If you enjoy outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, winter sports and lake country then this is an area you will love to live and work in.
Applicants who reside in Northwestern Ontario and have experience working in a cross-cultural environment, coupled with knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities presented to those living in the Northwest Ontario, are assets. Position Reports To: GIS Superintendent
Position Overview
The GIS Systems Developer will report to the GIS Superintendent and work closely with the GIS Systems Administrator, as well as the Mine Site TMA and Mine Operations teams.
The primary focus of this role is to support and maintain custom instrumentation monitoring systems developed by our team and used at the mine to monitor ground movement and other activities. These systems are built on SQL Server and Python scripts to handle data retrieval and processing. They are accessed through Web GIS dashboards and apps as well as cloud housed spreadsheets connected to SQL databases.
The role involves troubleshooting, data validation, and user support, with a strong emphasis on analytical thinking and responsiveness to operational needs. In addition to system support, the successful candidate will assist with the development and maintenance of ESRI-based Web GIS applications and custom widgets. The role also includes learning GIS concepts such as geoprocessing, spatial data management, and map publishing.
Occasional fieldwork will be required, including support for drone and bathymetry surveys.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Daily systems health check.
- Provide technical support for SQL Server–based instrumentation monitoring systems.
- Troubleshoot data issues, perform SQL queries, and update tables as needed.
- Maintain, develop and support Power Query–connected spreadsheets and web dashboards.
- Design, develop and implement routines and scripts using Python.
- Collaborate closely with the GIS Systems Administrator, TMA, and Mine Operations teams to ensure system reliability and performance.
- Maintain and develop custom Web GIS widgets (JavaScript, Node.js).
- Learn and apply GIS concepts including geoprocessing, spatial analysis, and map publishing in the ESRI software suite.
- Support users with data access, reporting tools, and issue resolution.
- Host presentations and training sessions remotely and on site.
- Participate in occasional fieldwork, including drone and bathymetry surveys.
- Document procedures and contribute to system improvement initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Diploma or degree in Computer Science, Web Development, GIS, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of experience in Database Management, Application and or Web development or a related discipline
- Experience with Python development with emphasis on data import, processing and analysis.
- Experience with JavaScript and Node.js for web development.
- Experience working SQL Server databases
- Exposure to ESRI technologies (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro) is an asset.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication and customer service orientation.
- Willingness to learn GIS and field instrumentation systems.
- Valid Class G driver's license.
- Can-do attitude and willingness to learn.
