Shell Recharge Solutions is seeking a Head of Software Engineering Development!
The Head of Software Engineering Development – India CoE will report directly to the CEO and lead all software development and testing activities for the SKY platform based out of India. This leader will build, scale, and empower a high-performing software engineering organization that serves as the global development hub for SKY, Shell’s EV charging platform. As a key member of the technology leadership team, you will be a strategic and execution-focused technologist who drives high-quality software delivery, organizational growth, and engineering excellence.
This role will collaborate closely with DevOps, SRE, and Release Management teams to ensure alignment across the platform. These functions, however, report separately into the Run and Maintain organization and are not part of this role’s direct reporting structure.
This role is a cornerstone of Shell Recharge Solutions’ global technology strategy. As Head of Software Development & Engineering – India Center of Excellence, you will lead the testing and engineering teams delivering critical platform capabilities that drive the future of electric mobility.
What you’ll do:
- Lead the India-based SKY Platform software development and QA teams responsible for core services, applications, and integrations.
- Own the end-to-end development lifecycle for SKY Platform—from technical design and implementation to defect resolution and engineering quality.
- Define and implement the growth and expansion strategy for the India Center of Excellence, including organizational design, hiring, onboarding, and skills development.
- Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement within the engineering teams.
- Partner with Product Management, Program Management, Architecture, and Business stakeholders to align product strategy and execution.
- Drive engineering agility and code quality through strong adoption of Agile, DevSecOps, test automation, and clean architecture practices.
- Contribute to the evolution of SKY’s software architecture, scalability, and modernization initiatives.
- Track engineering KPIs such as velocity, quality, and throughput, and provide regular updates to global leadership.
- Collaborate effectively across time zones and functions to ensure timely, high-quality software delivery.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies, frameworks, and trends to inform strategic decisions and enhance team capabilities.
- Invest in leadership development, technical mentoring, and career growth for engineers within the India organization.
- Serve as a thought partner to the CPTO on software strategy, technical leadership, and organizational scale.
What We’re Looking For:
- Master of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
- 20+ years of software testing, development, and technical leadership experience.
- Proven track record of building and scaling global or regional engineering centers.
- Deep experience in enterprise-scale application development using cloud-native architectures, microservices, REST APIs, and modern frameworks (e.g., Spring Boot, Hibernate).
- Familiarity with modern engineering tools such as Git, Jenkins, JUnit, Bitbucket, and SonarQube.
- Agile and Project Management Skills: An Engineering Manager in an Agile environment is a key driver of technical delivery. This requires a strong grasp of Agile methodologies (like Scrum and Kanban) and the ability to apply them effectively. They must be able to:
- Facilitate Agile ceremonies and foster a DevOps culture.
- Manage team capacity and resource allocation.
- Break down complex problems into manageable tasks.
- Prioritize work based on business value.
- Identify and mitigate risks to the project.
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to influence and align with global stakeholders across Product, QA, DevOps, and Architecture.
- Informal leadership experience: Often, the transition to management starts with informal leadership roles. This could include mentoring junior developers, leading small projects, or acting as a technical lead. These experiences demonstrate an aptitude for guiding and inspiring others.
- Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort operating in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to sustainability, innovation, and Shell’s purpose to power progress with cleaner energy.
- Experience as a hands-on software engineer: This is the most fundamental requirement. They should have a proven track record as an individual contributor, having written and shipped code. This experience provides them with credibility and a deep understanding of the challenges their team faces.
- Experience in an Agile environment: The candidate must be comfortable and experienced with the principles of Agile development. This includes familiarity with Scrum or Kanban, continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD), and a focus on iterative development and fast feedback loops.
- Cross-functional collaboration: They should have experience working closely with product managers, designers, and other departments. This shows they can align engineering efforts with business goals and navigate the complexities of product development.
- Problem-solving and decision-making in a team context: The ability to analyze complex issues, consider different solutions, and make data-driven decisions that benefit the entire team is crucial.
