About the Department
The Town of Breckenridge Recreation Department is seeking a dedicated and customer-focused individual for the position of Outdoor Recreation Instructor. Primary responsibilities include planning, leading, and supervising outdoor recreation programs for participants of all ages, with a primary focus on youth ages 5–13. Additionally, this role provides instruction and guidance in climbing (indoor and outdoor), hiking, mountain biking, and fly-fishing. Outdoor Recreation Instructors ensure a safe and supportive environment by following established safety procedures, adapting instruction to varying ages and skill levels, and fostering skill development and confidence in participants. This position requires strong leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to engage and motivate both youth and adults in a positive and professional manner.
Individuals in this position are responsible for instructing climbing and mountain biking programs and lessons, and leading a variety of adventure programs including providing guided hikes and fly fishing.
- Climbing instruction includes assessing abilities, teaching how to belay, top rope and lead climb, orienting climbers to the bouldering area, conducting climbing wall maintenance and enforcing safety procedures and practices to ensure the safety of climbers and staff.
- Mountain bike instruction includes assessing abilities, explaining and demonstrating riding techniques, teaching basic bike maintenance and enforcing safety procedures.
- Hiking instruction includes providing guided hikes and natural and cultural interpretation to locals and visitors of all ages and experience levels.
- Fly fishing instruction includes assessing abilities, teaching how to tie fishing knots, how to cast, and how to read water.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Basic CPR, AED, and First Aid Certifications are required within 60 days of hire.
- Preventing Disease Transmission (PDT) required within 60 days of hire.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Computer experience preferred.
- Previous experience working in a climbing gym, instructing climbing to students, outdoor climbing, and route setting preferred.
- Ability to belay a lead climber and lead climb on fixed quick draws at a 5.8 YDS level preferred.
- One (1) or more years of climbing experience preferred.
- One (1) or more years of work-related experience instructing or coaching youth activities or sports preferred.
- Knowledge of safe climbing techniques and a thorough understanding of the safe use of climbing equipment required.
- Demonstrated knowledge, skills and ability with mountain biking and/or personal hiking and age specific techniques/skills via work history and/or experience preferred.
- Experience teaching skills related to outdoor recreation, environmental education, or other pertinent outdoor activities preferred.
- Familiarity with the Town of Breckenridge Open Space Trail System and knowledge of natural resources, local flora and fauna preferred.
- Nationally recognized climbing instructor certificate attained through organizations such as American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA), Professional Climbing Instructors Association (PCIA), International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA) preferred.
- Current Wilderness First Aid or more advanced wilderness medicine certification preferred.
Other Qualifications
Typical Hiring Pay Range: $20.50 - $21.75 per hour.
WORK SCHEDULE
Primary shifts for this position are generally between the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., and can be up to 40 hours per week. Individuals in this position must be flexible in terms of availability, and may on occasion be required to work other shifts as needed, including early morning, late nights, weekends and holidays.
