About the Department
To perform a variety of duties and responsibilities involved in the cleaning and maintenance at assigned sites; and to keep school grounds clean.
Position Duties
- Perform routine custodial activities during afternoon and evening hours at an assigned school site or facility; sweep, scrub, dust mop, wax, buff and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, multi-purpose rooms and other work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets.
- Clean classrooms, cafeterias, lounges, offices and other facilities as assigned; empty and clean waste receptacles; spot mop spills and remove gum, graffiti and debris.
- Clean and disinfect drinking fountains assigned and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; clean mirrors, tile and windows; unclog drains and toilets as necessary.
- Clean chalkboards and erasers and empty pencil sharpeners; wash windows and walls.
- Moving, assembling up and arranging furniture, supplies and equipment in preparing classrooms and multi-purpose rooms for special events, track changes or meetings.
- Replace light bulbs and lighting tubes; dust wash and polish furniture and woodwork and make minor, non-technical repairs as needed.
- Lock and unlock doors and windows gates; maintain tight security of school property according to established guidelines; observe assigned areas to prevent vandalism; set site security system.
- Report vandalism, safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority; report supervisor need for maintenance repairs to appropriate authority.
- Assist in maintaining inventory, ordering and stocking custodial supplies for the assigned site.
- Pick up paper, trash and debris around school grounds and in buildings; sweep and clean walkways and entrances.
- Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, buffer and polisher, scrubbers, and other cleaning equipment as assigned.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from high school, and sufficient training and experience to perform the knowledge and abilities listed above.
- Custodial experience in a school setting is desirable.
- Some positions may required a valid driver's license and the availability of private transportation or ability to provide transportation between job sites.

Examination
The examination components consist of a qualifying written multiple-choice exam. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be required to take the exam and are notified via email communication of the scheduled date, time, and location. A valid picture identification is required prior to admittance.
After the exam procedure concludes for this recruitment, an eligibility list will be established to fill future vacancies. When eligibility lists include open and promotional lists of qualified persons through competitive examination, the promotional list will be used first, unless otherwise stated on this bulletin.

Work Schedule:
This position typically works full-time 8 hours/day, 40 hour/week, and observes a 12-month work calendar.
Salary and Benefits
The salary rate for a new employee is at the first step of the appropriate five-step salary schedule for this position. The probationary period is 130 work days (not counting sick, industrial accident). Upon becoming permanent, a one-step salary advance shall be granted with future annual advances up to the fifth step of the salary schedule.
Holidays and Leaves
Seventeen (17) paid holidays that fall within the work year, pursuant to the District's Collective Bargaining Agreement with California Schools Employees Association Chapter 296 (CSEA).
Sick leave shall be granted in the proportion of daily hours worked. Vacation is earned at the prescribed rate as part of compensation, and does not become vested until after completion of the initial probationary period.
Work Environment:
Indoor/Outdoor environment. Exposure to fumes, dust, odors, cleaning agents; excessive noise, such as custodial equipment (vacuums, shampooers, buffers, etc.); changes in temperature and adverse weather conditions.
Physical Demands:
50 lb. lifting/carrying requirement.
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: Walking and standing for extended periods of time; lifting, carrying, reaching, bending, stretching, pushing and pulling; climbing step ladder/stool; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate cleaning tools and equipment.
