Purpose: To perform specialized administrative, clerical, and technical duties that support the financial operations of the assigned department. This includes processing accounts receivable/payable, maintaining accurate fiscal records, preparing reports, and conducting financial analysis under the supervision of the Accounting Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for general accounting inquiries.
  • Process vendor payments, invoices, purchase orders, and reimbursements.
  • Prepare journal entries, balance ledgers, and reconcile accounts.
  • Conduct financial analysis and prepare various reports.
  • Maintain inventory and budget records.
  • Collaborate with the Finance or Procurement Department on vendor setup and compliance.
  • Provide training on accounts receivable/payable processes to internal staff.
  • Assist in grant reimbursements, state/local tax return preparation, and benefit payment issuance.
Minimum Requirements 
  • Graduation from high school or successful completion of GED, preferably supplemented by business school or college coursework in accounting or bookkeeping. 
  • Requires a minimum of three (3) years of experience in general accounting, bookkeeping, and/or purchasing, which should include data entry, accounts payable/receivable, and electronic recordkeeping. 
  • Proficient in the use of computers with knowledge of Microsoft Office Software. 
  • Must complete a background check related to this position before any promotion or offer of employment. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
Additional Requirements
  • May require some local travel and use of a personal vehicle. 
  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager, which may • include long hours and unusual schedules.
