Position Summary
The Blending Operator is responsible for the accurate preparation, mixing, and movement of raw materials used in the compounding process. This role ensures proper functioning of blending systems, pumps, and material flow across silos, railcars, and trucks while maintaining inventory accuracy, safety compliance, and clear communication across departments and shifts. Operating in a high-performance team environment, the Blending Operator plays a critical role in supporting extrusion and other downstream processes by consistently producing high-quality blends.
Essential job functions
- Operate blending systems to load, scale, and mix raw materials according to prescribed formulas.
- Ensure pumps are operational and feeding correctly to folios/track systems.
- Monitor UFT silo and blending systems (Systems 1, 2, and 3) for accuracy, flow, and performance.
- Perform weekly raw material inventories, silo tracking, and warehouse stock verification.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure FIFO (First-In, First-Out) inventory practices are followed.
- Load/unload materials from railcars and trucks, following all safety and documentation procedures (including blue flag requirements).
- Complete railcar tracking and updates daily/weekly to align with production needs.
- Maintain cleanliness of blending areas, silo bases, rail spur, raw material storage, docks, and stabilizer building (Blue Room).
- Operate forklifts and other mobile equipment (must maintain current ME certification).
- Conduct daily safety audits, hoist inspections, and spill/emission reports.
- Communicate proactively with other shifts and departments to coordinate production and material availability.
- Support R&D trials and production adjustments by preparing or modifying blends as required.
- Identify mechanical issues, create maintenance work orders, and support maintenance teams as needed.
- Maintain and operate dumpsters and compactors in designated areas.
- Read, interpret, and comply with Certificates of Analysis (COAs), SDS requirements, and standard formulas.
- Understand the downstream impact of blending on extrusion quality and efficiency.
- Accurately complete and submit productivity, downtime, and shift reports.
- Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives and adhere to all Standard Work practices.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by management.
Minimum Requirements
- At least 1 year of experience in blending or 3 months in current job for Internal Candidates
- Strong commitment to safety protocols and safe material handling.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic math skills, including fractions, percentages, and simple Excel formulas.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and consistency.
- Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for prolonged periods.
- Ability to climb ladders/stairs up to 70 ft (silo access).
- Mechanical awareness with the ability to identify and report equipment issues.
- Experience operating forklifts and mobile equipment (valid certification preferred).
Work Environment:
The atmosphere is that of a manufacturing plant. The position will primarily work where moving machinery produces noise. Employees must wear Personal Protective Equipment that is issued for that location. Temperature can range from extreme cold to extreme heat. Physical fitness to include movements, positioning, remaining stationary which include standing, walking, sitting, lifting, carrying, climbing, pushing/pulling, forward bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling, postural balancing, manipulating, trunk rotation, handling, gripping, and talking (hearing). Must be able to lift up to 80lbs-100lb with assistance. Frequent use of company communication devices are required such as a computer, phone, and other office electronics.
