The Archives Specialist will provide archival and records management services at the facility in Forestville, MD. The Archives Specialist will support the accessioning, processing, preservation, and intellectual control of agency archival materials, ensuring long-term accessibility and compliance with federal standards and regulations. This role requires a detail-oriented professional with strong archival training, technical skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with government staff.


Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial processing of records, accessions, and donations.
  •  Develop finding aids and tools to enhance access to record collections.
  •  Strengthen intellectual control over record collections through arrangement and description.
  •  Perform basic document preservation to ensure the long-term viability of archival materials.
  •  Interpret and apply government policies, regulations, and directives as directed by the client.
  •  Prepare written reports, documentation, and other archival program deliverables.
  •  Communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and executive-level personnel.
  •  Utilize Microsoft Office and related software for documentation and reporting.


Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Library/Information Studies with a focus in Archival Studies from a recognized graduate program (e.g., University of Maryland, University of Texas–Austin, etc.).
  •  Minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional archival experience.
  •  Proficiency in basic document preservation methods.
  •  Demonstrated experience in developing finding aids and processing archival accessions.
  •  Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  •  Ability to read, interpret, and apply government policy and regulations.
  •  Physical ability to lift at least 40 pounds.
  •  Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  •  Highly detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  •  Experience working in a federal archives, library, or records management program.
  •  Familiarity with federal records schedules, metadata standards, and archival best practices.
  •  Knowledge of digital preservation and electronic records management.
  •  Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a structured government environment

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move boxes up to 40 pounds and push/pull carts. 
  • Ability to stand, bend, reach, and move throughout the work location as needed. 
  • Ability to handle delicate materials with fine motor skills and perform repetitive motions. 
  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
