Job purpose
Supervises and coordinates all activities and employees within production specifications and estimates man-hour requirements for completion of job assignments. Complies a list of required materials and supplies for completion of the job. Interprets specifications, blueprints, and job orders for workers and assigns to specific jobs. Establishes or adjusts work procedures/schedules to meet production schedules. Provides Estimator with input when bid requires pricing for shop work. Sets up and conducts training seminars as required for safety and other issues that may arise.
Directly initiating and/or implementing a production schedule and man-hour estimates for completion of a job assignment Perform supervisory and management functions related to job cost accounting. Responsible for ordering the required materials and supplies for the completion of jobs. Assigns duties and adjusts work procedures/schedules to meet production schedules. Ensures that the workers accomplish the required job assignments. Maintains an accurate record of employee time and certification records. Ensures that yard safety rules and regulations are upheld throughout the yard. Carries out duties as assigned by the Sr. Project Manager and/ or Production Manager.

Management: Responsible for allocating resources to proper projects. Recommends and approves hiring and discharging of employees. Ensures accuracy and quality of work. Production meetings daily. Assist on setting priorities for repair work and disseminating this information to the shop supervisors.
Estimating: Supplies support on bids. Estimates additional items to the work package.
Billing: Tracks all job cost. Provides weekly billing projections. Prepares, edits, and proofreads correspondence, invoices, and related materials. Submits completed invoices to Finance for payment. Calls on delinquent accounts.
Contracts: Negotiates contracts with customers.
1. Directs all work form all trades assigned to a vessel he/she would manage. Act as liaison with job estimator. Provide calculations on hours involved, materials needed, and staff required.
2. Recognize and communicate to Operations Manager any priority projects or problems, such as employee or job costing issues.
3. Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed, bring problems to the attention of the necessary individuals including but not limited to, Safety/QA and Human Resources.
4. Coordinate, direct and lead workers engaged in shipbuilding activities. Support the Sr. Project Manager or Production Manager.
5. Support the crews to obtain top quality workmanship, efficiency, employee satisfaction, morale, communication, commitment, teamwork, and pride.
6. Ensure that hours are assigned to the proper vessel.
7. Suggest and initiate personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers, hires and training requirements. Adhere to the company’s Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Policy when taking part in any employment action or decision, such as hiring, job assignment, layoff, or termination.
8. Analyze and resolve worker problems and recommend motivational plans.
9. Communicate regularly about repair and maintenance needs on all major pieces of equipment on assigned jobs.

1. Knowledge of administration and management. Must be able to plan, allocate resources, manage production and coordinate people and equipment.
2. Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved in shipbuilding, specific to his/ her department.

9. Advanced mechanical skills a plus.
11. Clean driving record.
12. A minimum of 10 years of related skill, knowledge or experience is needed for these occupations. Must include related on-the-job training and experience in shipbuilding.
13. Experience and training must include methods, techniques, equipment, and hands-on experience in a supervisory position.
14. High school degree or equivalent.

Frequent contact with skilled trades workers, superintendents, estimators, project managers, and/ or customers.
Work Environment
Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.
This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Occasionally the work environment may be loud.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position periodically requires long hours and weekend work. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position.
Travel
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent or five to seven years’ related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Education or Experience
Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity.
- Experience in a marine field / Shipbuilding / ship repair / operation
- College degree or equivalent combination of education and years of experience.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications
Demonstrate excellent written and verbal skills. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project Manager. Implements, manages, and coordinates the repairs of vessels in a shipyard in a safe manner. Accountable for job cost and profitability. Also, familiar with USCG, ABS, Navy, Army, and VDOT rules.
