Summary:

The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is a federally recognized Tribe with its ancestral homeland located in Niobrara, NE. The Tribe does not have a reservation in the classic definition; rather, the Ponca Restoration Act defined its jurisdiction as a ‘Service Delivery Area’ comprised of 15 counties throughout parts of Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. Within its Service Delivery Area, the Tribe offers a broad range of health, social, educational, and cultural services. 

Extracts all necessary information and assigns ICD -10 (International Classification of Diseases) and CPT (Current Procedure Terminology) Codes which accurately describe each document diagnosis, surgical procedure and special therapy or procedure according to established guidelines and practices. Monitors and reports on completeness and accuracy of clinic documentation. 

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Uses the Aprima and Electronic Health Record (EHR) functionality to complete tasks, including basic Clinical Application Coordinator (CAC) tasks (clear electronic signature, unlock visits, view/delete notifications) in absence of Clinical Applications Coordinator. 
  2. Knows and follows the mission, organization, program policies of the health care delivery system of the clinic. 
  3. Uses and maintains a specialized knowledge of ICD-10, CPT and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Coding Procedures, Medicaid and Medicare Policies and Procedures.
  4. Leads the implementation of ICD-10 Coding to be, in compliance with National Billing Standards.
  5. Ensures accuracy and consistency of patient’s recorded documentation, both paper and electronic to facilitate correct coding of visits.
  6. Follows up with supervisor and/or providers as necessary when in house processes/coding documentation is incomplete or inaccurate based on general approved coding practices, or when in house processes/policies are not followed.
  7. Assists in researching assignments that potentially can maximize reimbursement as assigned by Supervisor.
  8. Reviews patient visits (all phases) to ensure accuracy and consistency in the completion of the visit documentation.
  9. Collects and reviews data to identify deficient or lack of data that is non-compliant with organizational Policies and Procedures.
  10. Assists with verifying, analyzing, solving, and prevention of problems that would impact quality of patient care rendered in the facility.
  11. Appreciates the cultural differences of the Native American Indian population and the effects these differences have on health care delivery.
  12. Maintains confidentiality. 
  13. Assists in the development and implementation of process improvements.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

 

      

Relationships and Authority:

Incumbent has no supervisory responsibilities. The Director of Business Services has supervisory authority with this position in relation to personnel issues.

Working Environment and Physical Demands:

This position is located within an outpatient medical clinical setting. Works throughout the clinic area. Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during work hours. Employee is subject to emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel and visitors.

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Professional Coder Certification (Outpatient Coding).
  3. One or more years’ experience coding.
  4. Specialized knowledge of ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS Coding Procedures; Medicare & Medicaid Policies & Regulations. 
  5. CPC (Certified Professional Coder), or CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist – Physician Based) certification.
  6. Computer proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint programs.
  7. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  1. Work well in a team environment, and be capable of building and maintaining positive relationships with other staff/departments. 
  1. Successfully pass drug and alcohol testing, education, character, and criminal background checks.
  2. Able and willing to travel.

Preferred:

  1. Associates degree in registered health information technician or related degree.
  1. Have valid driver’s license and be insurable.
  1. CCS-P (Certified Coder Specialist-Physician based) certification
  2. Knowledge of Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine--Clinical Terms® (SNOMED) terminology
  3. One year of experience with EHR (Electronic Heath Records).
  4. One year of experience working with Native Americans or Native American organizations. 
  5. Knowledge of Public Law 93-638; Public Law 101-484 and Privacy Act of 1974, HIPAA.

 

Preference will be given to Ponca Tribe of Nebraska members or members of a federally recognized tribe.  However, all qualified individuals are eligible.

The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is an at-will employer.
