ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provide support to Production Operations through the effective deployment of Process and Project Engineering resources in order to lower scrap rates, improve quality, and achieve 100% delivery rating. A large percentage of the day is spent in the plant working directly with supervisors and hourly teams in order to achieve the corporation’s overall financial goals.
- Identify areas within the manufacturing process that are not performing up to standard and implement data driven solutions in order to improve the performance.
- Identify areas within the manufacturing process that can be improved from their current level of production in order to make the plant more competitive. Design, purchase, and implement cost savings facilities to accomplish this task.
- Provide technical knowledge and skill for the production operations that will keep the process from incurring variation to stated process parameters. For example: Vinyl Shaping, Glass Bending, Lamination, and others.
- Assist both Production and Quality in the proper identification of Quality Defects and then implement countermeasures such as Poke Yokes, DOE’s, and other tools to ensure prevent additional defects.
- Work closely with the Quality Organization when finding root cause and following the customer 8D process including meetings directly with the customer. This also from time to time includes travel to their sites in order to assist them in using the product and also to better understand the root issues at their location.
- Coordinate on a weekly basis with the Maintenance Organization work that must be done on the production lines each week to maintain high levels of OEE.
- Participate as the Plant’s representative in quoting new products which may also involve working on a company-wide team to develop the corporate quoting strategy.
- As Engineering Manager, work with Human Resources to find exceptional candidates to hire that will strengthen the organization and foster teamwork within the facility.
- Responsible to mentor and teach engineers how to perform their roles within the facility. Provide them support in achieving their goals and objectives.
- Take responsibility for Capital Projects in the range of $50K to $5.0 mil from concept to successful implementation and launch. This includes approved concepts, project funding approval, quoting, design, build, and tracking of project through the use of Microsoft Project and providing regular updates to corporate leaders in the form of reports, Gantt charts or executive summaries.
- Delegate projects to Project Engineers and manage outcomes.
- Participate in collection and formatting of data for reporting out to corporate executives in Plant Operating Meetings (POR’s).
- Follow personally and enforce for the engineering group all safe practices. For all new equipment or processes, the safety engineer and HR must be a part of the design process and following through to implementation to validate initial assumptions were safe.
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (ME, CE, EE, ChE) or equivalent field, required
- 7+ years of glass manufacturing experience
- 7+ years of experience in a Management Role leading engineering.
- Additional Training as required for improvement of skills in support of corporate goals/objectives
Years of Experience:
- 15+ in glass manufacturing preferably within the manufacturing plant. (Hands on the product type experience – ability to recognize problems, predict potential outcomes, and implement countermeasures quickly enough to avoid problems)
Other Requirements:
- Travel: Up to 40% to all Carlex Locations, typically via ground transportation (driver’s license required).
- Must be an uncompromising leader of corporate safety initiatives. In this role, the engineering manager is responsible for all employees under their observations.
- Solid understanding of Lean, 5S, DOE, Six Sigma and other process improvement tools in order to move the organization into a more competitive position.
- In addition to engineering skills, it is beneficial to have been assigned directly to production operations in leadership roles in order to broaden the skills of the individual in this position.
- Extended hours are frequently required of someone in this position.
- The ability to backfill the Area Manager or Plant Manager and assume full responsibility during their absences for vacation or at other times with a full understanding of critical metrics that support meeting the customer demands both in Quality and Delivery.
- Work beyond the traditional 40 hours per week may be required as work load or projects dictate, including weekends and holidays
KEY COMPETENCIES
- Advanced/Intermediate skill level with Microsoft Office Suite; Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of the glass manufacturing processes including part specifications and process capabilities. Review customer specifications and expectations prior to launch.
- Solid understanding of interface between the glass process and Controls and Robotics; teams so they work in concert. This knowledge is crucial when troubleshooting downtime.
