Basic Function:
Performs journey-level, skilled work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, overhaul, and rebuilding of a wide range of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including diesel, hybrid, electric, and gasoline-powered units, as well as construction, specialized, and aerial equipment.
Employees in this Bargaining Unit classification may be assigned to any type of work in the Fleet Services Department. They will work under the direction of the Fleet Services Shop or Shift Foremen as assigned. They may perform work functions individually or with the assistance of other Foremen, Technicians, Apprentices, Trainees, Interns, and Parts Specialists.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Driving District vehicles and equipment that require a Commercial Driver’s License and/or Driver’s License is an essential function of this position.
- All air conditioning work
- Light & heavy-duty vehicle, truck & trailer repair
- Accurate diagnosis and repair of all hydraulics
- All brake repair: air, hydraulic, and electric
- Capable of performing annual PMs and repairs on all aerial equipment (man lifts, digger derricks, cranes, etc.)
- All fleet service work including cranes, digger derricks, and man lifts
- Will be efficient in all classes of welding and fabrication work to include plasma and acetylene cutting, wire feed welding, aluminum wire feed welding, arc welding and air arcing
- Heavy fabricating repair work and capable of building beds, etc.
- Proficient at all automotive electrical work and accurate diagnosis of repair work
- Be able to complete all mandated compliance inspections on all types of District owned vehicles, mounted equipment, construction equipment, and specialized utility equipment as assigned.
- Will be proficient with scanners and diagnostic tools
- Will be proficient with department maintenance program
- Will be proficient in fiberglass and repair
- Work with and help train Fleet Services Apprentices
- Actively participate in all aspects of our safety program, including but not limited to:
- Following all safety policies and procedures;
- Alerting supervisors and coworkers to unsafe or hazardous working conditions;
- Reporting any safety incidents or close calls within 24 hours to your supervisor; and
- Accepting feedback from supervisors and coworkers regarding your own safety performance.
Required Qualifications: (Education and Experience, Licenses and/or Certification):
- To be considered for this position, a qualified applicant must either complete the Fleet Services Apprenticeship AND have current Journeyman status recognized by IBEW Local 77, OR by hold a current a Journeyman level Fleet Services Technician card recognized by the District and Union, AND by passing the Journeyman test. OR by having three years’ work experience at the journey Fleet Technician level AND must the Journeyman test within 1 year of hire.
- Must have current, OR be able to obtain within 12 months of hire, Washington State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Class A endorsement.
- Must have current, OR be able to obtain, IFPS Mobile Hydraulic Mechanic Certification within 1 year of placement.
- Valid First Aid Card including CPR training, equivalent Washington State requirements for industrial first aid, OR be able to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
- Must have current forklift certification, OR be able to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to properly operate all District equipment.
- Basic knowledge of the parts department and parts location.
- Write legibly and be able to maintain records and files.
- Must be able to work in team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and cooperate with all levels of District personnel, contractors, and customers.
- Must be able and willing to train all Fleet Services Apprentices with correct and safe industry standard practices.
- Knowledge and understanding of District and Washington State Workers Safety Rules and Regulations.
- Knowledge and understanding of District/Department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Commitment to the Code of Excellence.
- Attend all District and Department safety meetings.
Physical Requirements
- Must be mentally and physically fit for duty.
- Duties require the physical dexterity, strength, and balance to work safety in all aspects of fleet repair and maintenance activities including truck mounted electric utility specialty equipment
- Must possess good visual perception and color comprehension
- Must be able to work in field environments with varying weather conditions
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
