SUMMARYThe Food Safety Supervisor is responsible for the execution, maintenance, and monitoring of plant food safety programs and policies to ensure they comply with all pertinent government regulations, certification requirements, and customer expectations. Responsibilities include oversight and management of SQF program and company requirements to ensure the highest standard of food safety and quality. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  This list is not intended to be all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned.  

 

  • Execute, maintain, and monitor food safety programs and policies, which may include but are not limited to:  HACCP Plan, SSOPs, SOPs, Good Manufacturing Practices and Approved Supplier Program.  
  • Work with plant operations on the production floor to train, monitor and follow up on Food Safety programs and policies.  
  • Initiate corrective actions and foreign material reports in reaction to deviations to Food Safety programs and procedures.  
  • Provide training materials for orientation training and refresher training on Food Safety systems.  
  • Ensure plant programs and policies comply with all pertinent government regulations, certification requirements, and customer requirements 
  • Act as plant advisor for food safety questions, concerns, and/or incidents 
  • Perform plant food safety audits and verifications.  
  • Perform supplier audits as deemed necessary 
  • Keep plant management informed on plant compliance to programs and policies, changes to regulations or requirements, and new technologies 
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with other departments and co-workers 
  • Work primarily in a monitoring and advisory capacity  
  • Authority to stop processes in the event of gross non-conformance of procedures and/or regulations 
  • Delegate administrative responsibilities as needed 
  • Assist in employee evaluations for FSQA staff

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEA Bachelor’s degree preferred in a related field (food or meat science, biology, microbiology or chemistry) or the combination of education and experience that enables performance in all aspects of the position, including supervisory experienceExperience in food manufacturing, preferably meat and/or protein manufacturing.    HACCP Certification required; GFSI knowledge and experience; formal SQF Training is preferredWell-developed management skills utilizing sound management principles in leading a team of employeesMust be resourceful, self-sufficient and able to adapt to a fast-paced environment. 

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work well with othersAbility to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations.    Must be able to write informative reports, business correspondence and formal presentations on food safety topics that can be effective to all levels of personnel. 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language such as safety files and procedure manuals.  Must be able to effectively communicate with management personnel and others within and outside of the organization.  

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply mathematical applications to practical situations.  Must possess strong analytical and metric-based skills. 

 

REASONING ABILITYAbility to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written and/or verbal form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.   

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIESStrong personal computer skills such as Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and preferably Visio as well as all standard programs used by the industry and the ability to learn and effectively use any and all other computer programs that are or will be made available. Must have a basic understanding of statistics to be able to prepare and/or interpret data.  Must hold a valid driver’s license due to occasional travel to remote facilities for training and meetings.
