STUDENT ASSISTANT EMPLOYEE JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the Strategic Marketing & Communications Manager, the Student Communications Assistant is responsible for writing, researching, and distributing public relations, marketing, and other external communication materials.
JOB DUTIES:
· Researches, writes, edits, and distributes effective and creative press releases, media alerts, websites, brochures, annual reports, ads, and other marketing and public relations materials
· Develops and maintains effective working relationships with campus and community media
· Develops and maintains a database of media contacts
· Maintains media clipbook
· Works as a part of the Strategic Marketing & Communications Department creative team to establish themes and directions for advertising projects
· Proofreads print materials for inclusion of basic information, copy, and design consistency
· Compiles, writes, and submits information highlighting organizational achievements, along with staff and board accomplishments
· Prepares and delivers presentations
· Assists with tabling, distribution of marketing materials, and other engagement activities as necessary
· Submits event and meeting updates to campus newspaper
· Compiles statistics on marketing and public relations efforts for the Strategic Marketing & Communications Department
· Assists with the development of external communications schedules
· Handles a variety of general office duties including, but not limited to simple to complex typing, filing, photocopying, scanning documents, greeting visitors, answering phones
· Performs other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
· Must be a currently enrolled CSUN student
· Journalism or Communications major preferred
EXPERIENCE
· Previous related experience and/or specialized education preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· Ability or ability to learn to write accurate and effective copy in alignment with the USU’s brand message, style guide and specific project requirements
· Ability to be detailed oriented, self-motivated, and possess initiative
· Knowledge of PC and Mac systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Creative Suite
· Ability to execute written correspondence, reports, and organize data accurately
· Ability to communicate effectively in writing, including composition, grammar, spelling and punctuation
· Ability to verbally communicate effectively, including the ability to share relevant information, ask questions, listen well, and respond appropriately
· Knowledge of AP Style Guide
· Ability to ensure text is aligned with USU and campus style and communication guides
· Ability or ability to learn to independently manage multiple tasks simultaneously and adhere to deadlines without immediate supervision
· Ability or ability to learn to identify problems and/or concerns and recommend viable solutions
· Ability to provide excellent customer service
· Ability to work and contribute to an inclusive, diverse working and learning environment
· Ability to effectively work with others in a team environment

SUPERVISION:
Supervision is provided by the Strategic Marketing & Communications Manager.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed in a temperature-controlled office environment, as well as outdoors in varying weather conditions. Daily contact with members of the campus community, including students, faculty, staff, administrators and guests, is required. In addition to regularly assigned work schedule Monday-Friday, must possess an ability and willingness to work some weekends, academic interim, and break periods as needed; must be flexible, adaptable, and readily able to adjust to changes in work environment.
