About the Department

Summary 
The grant-funded Director of Student Support Services (SSS) is a 12-month, full-time position. The Director is responsible for achieving all program objectives as outlined in the SSS grant. This role includes developing activities, policies, and procedures to ensure full compliance with federal project guidelines. The Director provides leadership in planning, organizing, and managing the Student Support Services department, supervises and evaluates project personnel, maintains comprehensive program records, and oversees the approval and management of all grant expenditures. The Director ensures alignment with institutional policies and adherence to all U.S. Department of Education regulations and requirements.

Position Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Implements all facets of the TRIO SSS program under the direction of the college and grant guidelines.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates SSS staff.
  • Develops and manages SSS program budgets; authorizes expenditures of SSS project funds.
  • Prepares and submits all necessary U.S. Department of Education reports.
  • Coordinates resources between SSS and other college departments to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Develops and coordinates participant, staff, and project evaluations.
  • Coordinates the recruitment, identification, selection, and retention of eligible SSS participants through outreach and assessment processes.
  • Maintains cooperative relationships with community-based organizations and social service agencies to support student needs.
  • Develops and sustains effective working relationships with college faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Oversees and evaluates the daily operations and delivery of all SSS services and activities.
  • Maintains complete and accurate confidential SSS participant files, including applications, diagnostic and progress test scores, and summaries of services rendered.
  • Provides direct support to participants in the areas of academic advising, transfer planning, and completion of financial aid applications.
  • Coordinates the Early Academic Alert system for SSS students in collaboration with retention efforts
  • Prepares internal reports tracking student progress, midterm performance, and year-end outcomes.
  • Collaborates with the success coach on participant files, individualized service plans (ISPs), intake, and assessments.
  • Serves as an active liaison between the SSS program and college service departments including financial aid, admissions, and student services.
  • Coordinates and assists in providing workshops and training for program participants.
  • Coordinates academic advising and tutoring services tailored for SSS participants.
  • Establishes policies and procedures for participant needs assessment.
  • Establishes, evaluates, and revises information and reporting systems to document SSS participant success and track attainment of project objectives.
  • Leads the writing and submission of the SSS program grant proposal.
  • Attends meetings as needed to represent Student Support Services on and off campus.
  • Remains current on national, regional, and state educational and professional initiatives and implements changes as appropriate.
  • Provides direction for unique student situations to resolve potential threats and/or conflicts.
Supervisory Responsibilities 
Directly supervises three employees; two of which have non-supervisory roles. Provides supervision for one subordinate supervisor who manages an average of six part-time employees in the Tutorial Program. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education Minimum:  
Master's degree in education administration, student personnel services, counseling or related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
Education Preferred:
None
Experience Minimum: 

  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of professional experience providing counseling and support services to at-risk, low-income, first-generation, and/or students with disabilities from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated experience (3-5 years) in progressively responsible roles involving program management, implementation, and facilitation.
  • Prior experience managing TRIO programs or working with student populations served by TRIO or similar federally funded support initiatives.

  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.                                     
Reasoning Ability                                                     
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills      
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
