DOWL is looking for an enthusiastic Transportation Intern to join our dynamic team and gain practical experience across a wide variety of engineering projects. This internship offers more than just a summer job — it’s a launchpad for your future career.  As a DOWL intern, you’ll receive personalized, one-on-one mentorship from experienced professionals and contribute meaningfully to active projects in disciplines like Transportation & Structures, Water & Environmental Services, Civil & Land Development, and Construction-Related Services. You’ll work with industry-standard software and tools to analyze data, develop designs, create technical documents, and support construction activities. Fieldwork, inspections, and construction administration may also be part of your experience.

Qualifications

To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience

One to two years of college-level course work in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering. Prior work experience in construction or civil engineering related fields is desirable.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Assist with field investigations, analysis of alternative solutions, project design, and construction inspection.
  • Perform engineering calculations in support of design projects.
  • Tabulate bid items and calculate construction bid quantities from plans and specifications to estimate construction costs.
  • Perform AutoCAD drafting support.
  • Prepare and route project related correspondence and record keeping.
  • Assist with writing and editing of construction specifications and technical reports.
  • Other engineering related duties as assigned.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals.  Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to clients and co-workers.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to prioritize special projects and daily workload to ensure that work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts, such as probability and statistical analysis, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • ARC GIS & AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge and experience is highly desirable.
  • Prior work experience in construction, traffic, or other civil engineering related fields is desirable.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear, and may occasionally use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment is generally an office setting, though intermittent field work is expected. Noise levels are usually moderate in the office, but may be high on construction sites, where hearing protection may be required.
