About The Weather Channel:

The Weather Channel, a division of Allen Media Group,  is a dynamic and rapidly evolving national media network, dedicated to delivering compelling content across diverse platforms. We pride ourselves on our agility, innovative spirit, and commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to shape the future of broadcasting and media. Our national television network is a leader in delivering live weather and news content across the US via satellite, internet streaming, and interactive app experiences, while our production teams create both Immersive Mixed Reality content for The Weather Channel and live coverage of college sports for our HBCU Go platforms.  We are at an exciting inflection point, investing heavily in modernizing our infrastructure and embracing next-generation broadcast workflows.

About the Role: We are seeking a visionary and highly experienced Senior Vice President of Broadcast Engineering and Technology to lead our technical evolution. This pivotal role will be responsible for defining and executing the strategic roadmap for our broadcast and production engineering infrastructure, ensuring our network remains at the forefront of technological innovation and operational excellence. The ideal candidate will be a forward-thinking leader with a deep understanding of emerging broadcast technologies, a proven track record in transforming legacy systems, and a passion for building resilient, scalable, and future-proof media delivery platforms.

This is a unique opportunity to drive significant change, implement a modern technology stack, and build a world-class engineering team that will power our network's growth for years to come.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership & Vision:

    • Develop and champion a comprehensive, multi-year strategic roadmap for broadcast and production engineering, aligning with the company's overall business objectives and content delivery goals.

    • Identify, evaluate, and recommend new and emerging technologies (e.g., IP-based workflows, cloud-native solutions, virtualization, AI/ML for media, automation, remote production) to enhance efficiency, scalability, and content quality.

    • Lead the architectural design and implementation of next-generation broadcast systems, transitioning from traditional SDI to IP-centric and cloud-hybrid environments.

  • Technology Stack Modernization:

    • Oversee the design, deployment, and optimization of our core broadcast infrastructure, including master control, ingest, production, playout, distribution, and transmission systems.

    • Drive the adoption of software-defined broadcasting/SDN, virtualized environments, and cloud-based media processing solutions.

    • Implement advanced automation tools and AI/ML-driven workflows to streamline operations, optimize resource utilization, and enhance content metadata.

    • Work with the IT team and Cybersecurity Office to ensure robust cybersecurity measures are integrated into all broadcast systems and workflows.

  • Operational Excellence & Reliability:

    • Ensure 24/7/365 operational reliability, high availability, and optimal performance of all broadcast systems and services.

    • Establish and enforce best practices for system monitoring, maintenance, disaster recovery, and business continuity.

    • Collaborate closely with operations, IT, and content teams to ensure seamless integration and efficient workflows from content creation to delivery.

  • Team Leadership & Development:

    • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of broadcast engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and technical excellence.

    • Be a working leader, rolling up your sleeves and actively participating in projects, providing hands-on technical guidance and support to your team.

    • Define organizational structure, roles, and responsibilities to support the evolving technology landscape.

    • Promote cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing within the engineering departments and across the organization.

  • Budget & Vendor Management:

    • Develop and manage the broadcast engineering budget, optimizing expenditures while ensuring strategic investments in technology.

    • Negotiate and manage relationships with key technology vendors, ensuring favorable terms and access to cutting-edge solutions.

  • Compliance & Standards:

    • Ensure all broadcast systems and operations comply with relevant industry standards (e.g., SMPTE ST 2110, ATSC 3.0), regulatory requirements (e.g., FCC), and internal policies.

Qualifications:

  • Experience:

    • 15+ years of progressive experience in broadcast engineering, with at least 5-7 years in a senior leadership role (VP or equivalent) within a national media network, major broadcaster, or large-scale content provider.

    • Demonstrated success in leading significant technological transformations, including transitions to IP-based and cloud-centric broadcast architectures.

    • Proven experience managing complex projects, budgets, and cross-functional teams.

  • Technical Expertise:

    • Deep expertise in IP networking for broadcast (SMPTE ST 2110, NMOS).

    • Extensive experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and their application to media workflows (e.g., cloud ingest, processing, playout, CDN integration).

    • Strong understanding of virtualization technologies (VMware, Kubernetes, Docker) in a broadcast context.

    • Familiarity with broadcast automation systems, media asset management (MAM), and content delivery networks (CDNs).

    • Knowledge of emerging technologies such as AI/ML for media, blockchain for content rights, and advanced data analytics.

    • Proficiency in broadcast transmission technologies (terrestrial, satellite, OTT).

    • Solid understanding of broadcast cybersecurity best practices.

  • Leadership Skills:

    • Exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.

    • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

    • Demonstrated ability to build, motivate, and lead high-performing technical teams.

    • Results-oriented with a strong focus on operational excellence and continuous improvement.

    • Adaptability and resilience in a fast-paced, evolving industry.

  • Education:

    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Broadcast Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field. Master's degree or relevant industry certifications (e.g., PMP, cloud certifications) are a plus.

What We Offer:

  • The opportunity to shape the future of broadcasting at a growing national network.

  • A collaborative and innovative work environment.

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.

  • Significant impact and autonomy in driving key technological initiatives.
