About the Department
Basic Purpose of the Job:
The role involves overseeing the installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems to ensure efficient water management and optimal plant health. The incumbent will supervise irrigation crews, manage schedules, troubleshoot issues, make necessary repairs, and maintain accurate records. Additionally, they will participate in hiring, training, and evaluating team members. This position also includes involvement in general park projects and maintenance activities, such as removing snow, chipping brush, pulling weeds, and maintaining park equipment.
Position Duties
Essential Functions:

- Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives for the Parks Division. Implement established policies and procedures.
- Establish schedules and methods for the personnel in the Parks Division. Plan, prioritize, supervise, and review the work of staff involved in irrigation operations, maintenance, and turf management.
- Coordinate work crew activities with other crews and departments, as well as outside agencies and contractors. Maintain daily log of activities.
- Inspect the work of crews in progress and, upon completion, ensure all work complies with local, state and federal standards.
- Responsible for the maintenance and care of all irrigation buildings, equipment, and irrigation systems to ensure that they are kept in good working order at all times.
- Evaluate operations and activities, recommend improvements and modifications; prepare various reports on operations and activities.
- Respond to customer inquiries and complaints and work to resolve concerns in a professional and positive manner. Follow-up with customers when concerns are resolved.
- Engage in all aspects of operations, maintenance, and repairs, including the most challenging tasks assigned within the work unit. Such as, scheduling fertilization and weed mitigation contracts to align with maintenance and irrigation operations.
- Prioritize turf health, plant health in park landscapes, and tree health to enhance the overall condition and aesthetics of the parks.
- Assist in preparing bid specifications; requisition supplies and materials; maintain and control appropriate inventory levels; interpret and implement plans and work orders.
Feedback: Establish goals and expectations for workers. Write and conduct employee evaluations.
Staffing: Ensure position descriptions are accurate and assist in interviewing and selecting candidates appropriate to the work.
Scheduling: Ensure schedules are set to get the work done in accordance with HR guidelines.
Training: Assure implementation of job specific training to ensure employee success.
Coaching: Set and discuss expectations for employee success. Conduct a formal mid-cycle progress review in addition to regular meetings with each subordinate.
Problem Resolution: Handles or gets assistance with employee issues in a timely manner to prevent escalation of problems and disruption to the department.
Employee Management: In accordance with HR polices, use established procedures to manage employee behavior. Actions are consistent and provide opportunity for the employee to improve.

Minimum Qualifications
Job Requirements:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED), supplemented by specialized training in park and turf irrigation.
- 1 year of supervisory or lead responsibility in public works operations, construction, and maintenance work.
- In-depth knowledge of industry products, including irrigation systems function and design, standard park maintenance practices, fertilizers/pesticides, and application equipment
- 5 years of experience in commercial irrigation service.
- Computer literacy with the ability to utilize industry-specific software and tools.
- Ability to train and supervise technicians and support staff.
- Demonstrate versatility and the capability to perform any assigned task, regardless of its complexity.
- This position is subject to non-standard working hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Current Colorado driver’s license with acceptable record.
- Traffic Control Flagger Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days.
- Preferred Licenses and Certifications in at least one of the following: ASSE 5110 Backflow Assembly Tester, Certified Irrigation Professional from the Irrigation Association, Landscape Technician Certification from the National Association of Landscape Professionals, and/or Herbicide Applicator License from the Department of Agriculture.
Requires the ability to perform heavy manual labor. Strenuous physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 100 pounds; frequent lifting, carrying, walking, and standing, hand/eye coordination. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of personal computer, and use of hands to handle small parts; vision for reading and preparing written reports and documents; frequent speech communication, hearing, and listening to maintain communications with employees and citizens. Requires driving and walking during inclement weather. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
