About the Department

The Redondo Beach Fire Department invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Firefighter!  We will be accepting online applications beginning at 9:00AM on August 20, 2025, through midnight on August 22, 2025, or until 250 applications are received. 

To be considered for this position, qualified applicants must attach the required documents outlined in the Selection Process section of the Job Bulletin. Qualified candidates will need to complete the test process as outlined in the Supplemental Information section of this bulletin.

The City of Redondo Beach Fire Department proudly serves from three Fire Stations strategically located throughout the city. In addition to firefighting, the Department cross-trains to provide special services such as emergency medical care, hazardous materials management, and special rescue operations. The Department maintains a daily staffing of two dedicated paramedic units, three fire engines, a 100' ladder truck, a fire boat, and a Fire Division Chief. Under the direction of the Fire Chief and supervisors, the Firefighter position is accountable for performing specified duties, responsibilities, tasks, and assignments of Fire Department operations.





Position Duties

The position is accountable to respond as a team member on an assigned fire company following a supervisor's direction to conduct emergency rescue and non-emergency operations including but not limited to:

• Performing standard firefighting procedures in laying hose, setting ladders and performing rescue, ventilation, salvage and cleanup functions; working in  hazardous situations; participating in all phases of fire department activities including fire suppression activities, use and operation of special equipment, safety, hazardous materials abatement, medical aid response and fire prevention and wildland fire response activities

• Participating and assisting in planning of drills and other training activities to learn and improve emergency response tactics

• Participating in physical fitness programs

• Participating in routine non-emergency activities such as fire prevention inspections, code enforcement, hydrant maintenance and district familiarization

• Performing routine in-station activities such as station housekeeping, equipment cleaning and maintenance

• Assisting in the performance of apparatus inventory and maintenance

• Assisting in evaluating new equipment

• Assisting in writing reports, making presentations and entering data

• Using City equipment, time, money and resources judiciously, safely and as authorized

• Performing public education activities and carries out positive public relations

• Exercising good judgment, self-restraint, cooperation and tact in dealing with a variety of issues and situations living and working in a fire station or in the field with peers, coworkers and supervisors of both genders

• Responding, at all times, to ordered duty recalls for staffing shortages, major alarms and emergencies

• Delivering outstanding internal and external customer service solving problems and communicating effectively with the public and fellow employees

• Conducting duties, responsibilities, tasks and assignments with a constructive, cooperative, positive, professional attitude and demeanor

• Supporting of the City's mission, goals, policies and objectives

• Supporting City's corporate values of: openness and honesty; integrity and ethics; accountability; outstanding customer service; teamwork; excellence; and fiscal responsibility

• Performing other related duties as required 
 

Minimum Qualifications

The position requires knowledge of: modern firefighting methods and procedures; emergency medical methods and procedures; CPR techniques; safety practices and regulations; fire science; principles of fire prevention and arson investigation; various firefighting rescue and emergency medical tools and equipment.

The position requires the ability to: use various firefighting rescue and emergency medical tools and equipment; take appropriate courses of action in emergencies; effectively and safely fight fires using a variety of firefighting apparatus and equipment; work in dangerous conditions around fire, chemicals and smoke; safely follow directions; live and work cooperatively with co-workers; exercise tact, self restraint and good judgment.

The position requires computer literacy with knowledge in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; ability to communicate using email programs; and, understanding and adherence to City policies for information technology.

Education, Experience, Certifications and Other Requirements

The position requires possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and has reached the minimum age of 18 years at time of appointment and has demonstrated an ability to swim.  Required possession of a valid Class "C" or Class "3" California Driver License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles (at time of appointment).  Required possession of a valid Class "B" (firefighter restrictive) California Driver License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles within 12 months of appointment.

The position requires graduation from a California State certified Firefighter I Academy; current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificates.  A certification as a Firefighter I from the California State Fire Marshal is desirable.

The position requires meeting the physical employment standards for the position.

The following qualifications are highly desirable:

Participation in the RBFD or another equivalent Fire Explorer Program is highly desirable.  A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is highly desirable.  Full-time firefighter experience, EMT-1 Ambulance and/or EMT-P experience is highly desirable.  Hazardous materials technician certification is highly desirable.

Qualified Military Veteran's are given an additional five (5) points to a passing score for both open-competitive and promotional recruitments.

    • Candidates will be notified of the Pass/Fail status of minimum qualifications via e-mail. 
  • Written Test: 
    • The written test is completed through the National Testing Network (NTN).
    • Instructions for completing the exam are below. 
    • The written test must be completed by 9/25/2025.
    • Candidates will be notified of the Pass/Fail status via e-mail.
  • Tentative In-Person Oral Panel Interview: October 2025
    • Candidates who successfully complete the NTN exam will be sent an invitation to schedule the oral panel interview. 
  • Candidate Information Session:
    • All candidates are invited to attend a Candidate Information Session hosted by the Redondo Beach Fire Department. The Candidate Information Session is tentatively scheduled for September 30, 2025 in the Large Meeting Room at the Redondo Beach Main Library. An invitation to the Candidate Information Session will be sent via e-mail confirming the date, time, and location.

National Testing Network is a service provided to conduct entry level testing in a standardized, professional environment. National Testing Network does not replace the City of Redondo Beach/Redondo Beach Fire Department's responsibility and decision making in the testing process. All candidate results are provided to City of Redondo Beach/Redondo Beach Fire Department, where the final decisions are made.

Supplemental Info

General Selection Process Information:

The selection process may include but is not limited to: Application review and evaluation, written examination, performance test and interview. All employment offers made by the City are contingent upon establishing proof of a prospective candidate's legal authorization to work in the United States and successfully passing all components of the pre-employment process, such as: reference check, background investigation, fingerprint criminal history check, post-offer drug test, post-offer psychological and post-offer medical examination, the cost of which will be borne by the City.

Candidates must fill out the employment application and supplemental questions completely and accurately. Incomplete applications, including references to "see resume", are considered incomplete and will be disqualified.
