About the Department
Acts as Lead or senior worker within the Office of Public Health providing assistance with locating and navigating resources to address environmental health, social and economic determinants of health and emerging public health threats. Supports the Public Health Manager and provides leadership for other staff as required. The Lead Public Health Navigator works closely with residents and community partners as required.
Position Duties
- Identifies Flint-area families who qualify for economic, housing, healthcare, or other assistance.
- Identifies gaps in services and advocates for improvement.
- Builds community cohesion by participating in, assisting in the planning of, and promoting positive community events and opportunities.
- Assists families in enrolling and maintaining enrollment in medical and social service programs.
- Provides input into data collection tools and systems to promote maximum inclusion.
- Attends community meetings, outreach and networking events to gather and share information, representing the City of Flint’s Office of Public Health with professionalism while adhering to their core values.
- Assists the Water Department with collecting samples, in compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule, and responds to abnormal results with education and resources.
- Assists Office of Public Health staff, Chief Resilience Officer and other City of Flint Administration staff in planning and implementing city-wide programs and events pertaining to public health.
- Adheres to all government, grant and internal reporting requirements.
- Participates in professional development activities related to public health core competencies.
- Collaborates with the Public Health Manager on public health strategies within the community.
- Schedules outreach events, sends invites for interdepartmental meetings and ensures continuous front desk coverage during business hours.
- Compiles and completes information in order to provide monthly reports to funders, government regulatory agencies and or the Public Health Manager, as necessary.
- In the absence of the Public Health Manager, provides coverage for community meetings and events.
- Presents Public Health information at conferences and other related activities as required.
- Participates in the selection, hiring and training of new staff as required.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Competent in Microsoft Office computer applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality and cultural competency.
- Ability to work well individually and on a team.
- Must be passionate, motivated and a self-starter.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required. A bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services or a related field is preferred.
- At least one (1) year of experience running daily office operations, including organizing outreach events, helping people connect to resources, and overseeing routine tasks, with proven leadership and coordination skills.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Must complete Public Health Navigator onboarding training within six (6) months of hire.
- Extensive knowledge of the Flint Community preferred.
- Fluent in American Sign Language, and/or Spanish preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, talk and hear; use hands to operate technical equipment and/or instruct others with the use of models or other manipulatives. The employee is required to communicate, receive, process and share information. The employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Ability to meet travel requirements of the job and occasional long-distance travel may be required.
