Purpose of Position:

The Environmental Coordinator assists with the planning, management, and implementation of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Indian Environmental General Assistance Program (GAP) grant; provides support and technical assistance in the planning, management, and implementation of successful tribal and regional environmental programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide technical assistance and training to tribes in planning, developing and implementing tribal environmental programs, including grant writing and grant management.
  • Coordinate and network with tribes, regional, state, and national entities to address local tribal environmental priorities; including identification, mitigation, and prevention of environmental hazards.
  • Collaboratively plan and coordinate environmental program trainings, and/or regional environmental conferences.
  • Prepare and submit EPA GAP quarterly/annual progress reports and grant proposals.
  • Provide environmental education to the public, community leadership, and other regional stakeholders; attend and present relevant information at council meetings.
  • Assist with environmental research, investigations, or other special environmental projects designed to protect public health.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of grant writing and grants management.
  • Knowledge of basic research principles.

UAF-NWC Water Quality Monitoring Credential within two years of employment; Valid driver’s license.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Use hands and arms to operate office or clinical equipment.
  • Sit more than half the workday when in the office.
  • Stand and/or walk more than half the workday when in the field.
  • Bend, stretch, twist, crouch and/or reach.
  • View electronic monitors for prolonged periods of time.
  • Lift or carry unaided 25 to 50 pounds (field gear).
  • Push or pull using with up to moderate force.
  • See and hear with normal acuity.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Work is conducted in a standard office environment and in the field environment to include potential exposures to latex, biohazard or other harmful substances.
  • Some travel is required (between 25 and 50% of the time).
  • Travel is done via large aircraft and small (less than 16 passenger) aircraft.
  • Travel is done using snow mobiles, all-terrain vehicles and/or boat. 
  • Work may be conducted outside in inclement weather conditions.
  • Work on the weekends and outside normal office hours is sometimes required.
