About the Department
The Seattle Animal Shelter (SAS) is seeking a motivated, professional, and dedicated individual to join our team as a Veterinary Services Customer Service Representative on the Veterinary Services team.
The Seattle Animal Shelter promotes public safety and animal welfare by enforcing Seattle's laws regarding animals, provides animal sheltering and adoption programs, and manages a veterinary services program. This position will have duties assisting both the surgery clinic and the shelter medicine program.
This is a non-benefit temporary assignment expected to last up to six months.

FAS is often the public's first interaction with the City of Seattle, operating as a customer-focused front door that assists with everything from paying utilities or reporting a pothole to requesting public information or even adopting a new pet.

Position Duties
- Answer high volume telephone calls and assist walk-in customers and foster parents by providing information regarding surgery services, vaccinations, microchipping, medical and home care instructions, and medication dispensing; make referrals to other organizations as necessary.
- Receive and process requests for scheduling and manage the veterinary appointment calendar.
- Create routine correspondence including letters, reports, and emails.
- Sort and distribute incoming and outgoing US mail, email, and voicemail.
- Completedataentryofstatisticsandinformationfromsurgeryandprocedurereports.
- Assist with research, coordination, and response to Public Disclosure requests.
- Establishandmaintainfilesystem;send,receive,andstoremedicalrecordsandimages.
- Issuepetlicenses,includingprocessingpaymentsandassistingwithrenewals.
- Process and prepare daily cash transactions and deposits.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
One (1) year of administrative experience involving customer service with public contact.
(Or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.)
The most successful candidates will possess the following:
- Prior experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter front desk/reception, working with animals, or providing administrative support at an animal business for at least one year.
- Prior experience as a veterinary assistant or animal care support staff.
- Commitment to excellent customer service and strong organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to interpret and apply City ordinance and rules.
- Ability to work with and respond to general public including angry or hostile customers.
- Experience with appointment scheduling software such as Clinic HQ.
- Familiarity with Idexx VetConnectPlus and digital radiograph imaging software.
- Current Medical Clerk license from Washington State.
- Prior cashier/register experience.
- Experience with PetPoint and Petriage.
Work Environment:
- The work is performed in a building that shelters animals and is often in a busy and noisy environment.
- Must be able to work near animals.
- Must be able to work weekends, evenings, and holidays regularly and consistently.
Other Qualifications
This position is classified as a Customer Service Representative. It is Civil Service represented, FLSA non-exempt and is eligible for overtime. The full range of this step-progression position is $32.31 - $36.17 per hour. Under the City’s Personnel Rules, all non-benefitted temporary assignments begin compensation at step 1. Employees receive premium pay in lieu of benefits for the first 1,040 hours of the assignment; once benefit eligible, premium pay ends and salary advances to step 2 of the range.
