Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervisor of the Recreation Supervisor, a one-on-one aid is responsible for the supervised inclusion, of said child, into a Camp or a Specific Program, creating, organizing and displaying personal leadership in a wide variety of recreational activities.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Takes directions from the Camp Director and/or Recreation Supervisors
  • Attends all staff and program meetings
  • Arrives on time and is prepared for the days activities.
  • Reports absences in a timely manner.
  • Is willing to work any day off trips when one-on-one participant is registered to attend.
  • Shows interest in the days activities and encourages the same for said child.
  • Is sensitive to the individual needs of said child.
  • Will maintain discipline of said child by offering strategies to increase impulse control, this will be accomplished by the staff member being in close proximity of said child at all time.
  • To increase skills of self-expression.
  • To encourage socialization and interaction through participation in structured and spontaneous group activities.
  • To provide a safe non-threatening environment in which skill development can be achieved.  Provide physical assistance when and where needed.
  • To encourage social independence and self-reliance.
  • To increase awareness of and encourage the development of new leisure activities.
  • To provide opportunities to increase self-confidence and self-esteem.
  • To provide opportunities to develop peer relationships.
  • Helps with housekeeping duties related to program operation as assigned.

 

 

SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT:

  • Uphold safety and risk management strategies in support of and compliance with Park District policies, procedures, ordinances and practices
  • Familiarity with and effective implementation of the Employee Safety Manual, Emergency Response Plan, and Crisis Management Plan
  • Attend professional educational and safety trainings
  • Assist with emergency procedures and building evaluation
  • Utilize Personal Protective Equipment when performing duties, based on job tasks
  • Correct unsafe conditions and/or report them to supervisor
  • Promptly report hazardous conditions, accidents and injuries to supervisor
  • Complete incident/accident report forms and promptly forwards them to supervisor

Qualifications


EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • College Degree preferred
  • Special Education Teaching Certificate preferred
  • High School Diploma Required
  • Worked with children/teens with special needs in the past is preferred
  • Minimum 2 years teaching or coaching experience in a camp or classroom setting
  • Ability to work safely in any given situation
  • Must possess current First Aid, CPR and AED Certification

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Regularly required to talk, hear or read
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds; and over 30 pounds with assistance
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception
  • Able to safely control and restrain said child if child gets physical

 

PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Employee must be able to function in a sometimes fast and ambiguous environment.
  • Employee possess patience and understanding with said child during difficult situations while always keeping safety as the number one priority
  • Employee should be able to maintain a positive working relationship with other employees
  • Possess the ability to work well with the general public, parents, peers and park district employees
  • Employee must work effectively under deadlines in a variety of environments and elements.
  • Employee must demonstrate leadership qualities to perform required work

 

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

  • None

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Employee performs most activities outdoors in the summer and indoors during the school year.
  • When outside temperatures and weather conditions can be extreme (heat, rain, etc.). Activities move inside, when possible, in inclement weather conditions.

 

COGNITIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must be able to respond to and handle children's behaviors in a positive appropriate manner
  • Employee must have the ability to follow directions
  • Employee must have good verbal and written communications skills
  • Employee must possess time management and organization skills to effectively perform the job
  • Employee must have the ability to make judgments with respect to confidential information and problem solving

Employee must use good safety awareness and judgment in all aspects of the position
