About the Sankofa Mobile Museum

The Sankofa Mobile Museum is a dynamic, interactive historical experience with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Natural and Historical Resources Division (NHRD). It travels throughout Prince George’s County and the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area, bringing untold stories of local history to life through augmented reality, virtual reality, and facilitated dialogue.

Sankofa connects students and communities to the past, encouraging critical thinking and inspiring social activism. The museum highlights the contributions of historically marginalized groups and challenges visitors to become agents of positive change.

Position Duties

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver educational and interpretive programs for K–12 students and general audiences.

  • Lead tours of the museum and facilitate public/family programs and special events.

  • Engage with guests in dynamic, respectful, and inclusive ways within the museum space.

  • Support museum operations at schools and community venues, including setup, breakdown, and guest assistance.

  • Research historical topics to support program content and assist in developing new interpretive materials.

  • Collaborate with the Museum Manager to plan and implement programs, tours, and interactive activities.

  • Maintain positive relationships with school personnel and community partners.

  • Assist with social media content and outreach, if applicable.

  • · Fulfill other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be currently pursuing or have earned a Bachelor’s degree in: Museum Studies, African American History, Latin American History, African American/Latin American Studies, Women’s Studies, LGBTQIA+ History, Public History, Social Work, Education, or a related field OR 4 or more years of relevant experience OR 4 years combined education and experience.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with youth (ages 5–17).

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout the service area.

  • Familiarity with K–12 curriculum standards and culturally responsive teaching practices.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); willingness to learn systems like Parks Direct or RecTrac.

  • Comfort with or interest in using social media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) to support educational outreach.

  • Spanish-speaking candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • A complete background check is required prior to hire.

Other Qualifications

Location: Office is in Upper Marlboro with travel throughout Prince George’s County & Washington, DC Metropolitan Area 
Schedule: Some weekends and holidays required, including Juneteenth. Flexible scheduling available for college students. Applicants must be available to work a minimum of 18 hours per week and no more than 29 hours.
