As an IT Manager at Isthmus Engineering, you will lead both day-to-day technology operations and long-term technology strategy.  This role blends strategic planning with direct, hands-on support – ideal for someone who values action as much as vision. You will ensure reliable access to critical tools and data for our team while guiding us toward AI-enabled workflows and optimal resource alignment. You will be part of a company that cares about you as an individual and aims to provide meaningful opportunities in a team-focused yet autonomous work environment.

The responsibilities of the position of IT Manager include:

  • Provide leadership, task management, and development of IT support staff.
  • Maintain and improve our technology infrastructure—workstations, servers, on premise and cloud data, network, cloud, and security systems.
  • Provide expert-level support and administration for our Microsoft 365 (M365) ecosystem.
  • Ensure smooth performance of key software platforms: Bentley OpenRoads Designer, Autodesk Civil 3D, Bluebeam Revu, Asana, Bentley ProjectWise, Esri ArcGIS, and HydroCAD.
  • Develop and manage external vendor relationships, including our IT managed service provider.
  • Develop and administer clear IT policies that balance security, efficiency, and continual process improvement.
  • Support the use of Microsoft Copilot, additional AI-enabled tools, and emerging technology where they improve productivity and project delivery.
  • Lead with a service mindset—supporting our team's technology needs with patience and clarity.
  • Maintain a strategic and responsive focus on ensuring our team has the resources and tools to do their jobs.
  • Demonstrate operational discipline through clear documentation and scalable procedures.
  • Manage internal IT functions and coordinate with other administrative and operational groups across the company.
  • Administer the IT budget to ensure the effective use of resources.
  • Develop and manage IT contingency plans to ensure secure operations.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and experience:
  • 7+ years of IT leadership, ideally in civil engineering, AEC, or consulting settings.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in applicable field strongly preferred.
  • Certifications in A+ and M365 preferred.
  • Strong background in end-user support, IT systems infrastructure, cybersecurity, and M365.
  • Working knowledge of civil engineering and CAD support software preferred.

The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the following skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Strong time management, organizational, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent follow-through and documentation habits.
  • Balancing immediate support with proactive technology planning.
  • Approachable, adaptable, and user-service focused.
  • Strategic thinking that can translate company needs into effective policies and systems.
  • Ability to maintain productivity in an autonomous environment.
  • Positive team-focused attitude.

Workplace & Culture

  • Work Style: Full-time (40+ hours per week). Primarily in-person at our St. Paul office, with flexibility as appropriate. This position requires capacity to be reachable and respond to occasional after-hours requests, including evenings and weekends, to address emergencies and meet business needs.
