Job Title:

Social Emotional Development Manager (RISE Together Campaign-funded)

Department:

Programs and Operations

Reports To:

Vice President, Youth Development

Status:

Salaried – Exempt

 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Social Emotional Development (SED) Manager is responsible for leading the design and implementation of BGCMA’s Social Emotional Learning framework and the social emotional growth and development of BGCMA’s members. They will oversee organizational strategies to promote a positive Club climate, supporting the physical and emotional safety of all youth. The SED Manager plays an integral role in identifying key resources and programs that help youth to develop the positive mindsets that enable them to thrive. The SED Manager will also guide staff training initiatives to support universal proactive practices for all Club youth. This role is funded by BGCMA’s RISE Together Campaign and is active through December 31, 2025.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

SED Programs and Events
  • Serve as the org-wide lead for targeted SEL programs.
  • Provide direct guidance and modeling for the implementation of SEL curricula and resources (Positive Action, Journeys: Paths to Adulthood, Gardening, Cooking Club, etc.).
  • Lead the activation of SED-related events across Club clusters.
  • Facilitate routine cross-regional meetings with site staff to identify and align on youth needs in SED. 

 

Staff Practices and Positive Club Climates

  • In collaboration with the Training and Development team, design and implement capacity building activities and training across the organization for Club staff. 
  • Provide direct support and resources for Clubs to support creating positive Club climates.
  • Conduct site visits to assess program quality, staff practices, and ensure healthy environments for SEL.
  • Coordinate resources and services in crisis situations to support youth, staff, and families.
 
Grants and SED Partnership Management
  • Manage the allocation of grant funds for initiatives related to social-emotional wellness.
  • Identify and engage strategic partners to support SEL, prevention practices, and intervention for youth and families.
  • Help sites with community-based mental health referrals when BGCMA’s support services are not sufficient to keep youth safe and stable. 
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community mental health agencies to ensure seamless referral pathways.

 

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 3-5 years in relevant experience in youth development, education, social emotional or mental health, or youth-serving nonprofit organization.
  • Experience leveraging community mental health partnerships.
  • Knowledge of social emotional learning practices with a particular focus on underserved youth (ages 6-18).
  • Demonstrated experience in training and developing afterschool program staff.

 

Skills, Values, and Competencies:

  • Skills in online learning, group facilitation, and mentoring; experience with problem-solving, e.g., developing novice youth development professionals. 
  • Knowledge of the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework is preferred.
  • A growth mindset, focused on meeting outcomes despite obstacles, seeking out challenges as opportunities to grow, taking setbacks in stride, and ability to galvanize oneself towards goals and impact.
  • Ability to manage interpersonal conflict situations requiring tact, relationship-centered practices and discretion.
  • Detail-oriented and possess excellent communication skills. Proficient in speaking, reading and writing in English.
  • Commitment to utilizing data and evidence-based practices to meet youth and site staff needs.
  • Excellent relationship building skills that foster trust, demonstrate cultural competence, validate values differences, and further BGCMA’s mission.

 

ENVIRONMENT & WORKING CONDITIONS:

Normal internal office environment with occasional need to travel to club locations within the Metro Atlanta area.  Frequent internal contacts with employees throughout the organization are required.

Exempt employees are not entitled, under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), to the protections of the wage and hour laws of the state or the FLSA. Exempt employees must always be paid on a salary basis and not be subject to reduction based on the quality or quantity of work performed.
