SCOPE OF POSITION: The contracted Chaplain seeks to provide comprehensive pastoral ministry to the residents and staff of the correctional facility and provide a partnership of services to inmates, staff, public officials, and the overall community. Rockingham County Department of Corrections is a 355-bed maximum-security County correction facility housing both male and female sentenced and pre-trial prisoners. The contracted Chaplain will work 20-30 hours per week, with flexibility needed for occasional evenings and weekends. 

Position Duties

We are committed to providing a safe environment for the inmate population here at Rockingham County Department of Corrections. We provide programs both in our facility and outside of the facility to assist inmates in enhancing and acclimating to their personal lives. The contracted Chaplain plans, coordinates, and conducts weekly ecumenical religious services for inmates through maintaining contact with local clergy associations, verifying and arranging religious melas for various faiths/denominations, recruiting/orienting volunteers + visiting clergy to facility guidelines, regularly supervising clergy/chapel/Bible Study/other volunteers, providing religious education and services in Spanish and English, arranging for guest pastors during personal absences, and preparing/maintaining records/reports related to scheduled activities, attendance, program activity, volunteer/clergy information, and submitting such information to the Director of Inmate Services & Programming. The contracted Chaplain must be available for direct contact with inmates on housing units for informal/requested pastoral counseling, on-call emergencies, end-of-life notifications, and support/spiritual guidance to inmates and staff as needed. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college with major/emphasis in Bible or Theology; or
  • Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited Seminary; and
  • Ordained, licensed, or commissioned by local church/denomination; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, work, and experience will be considered.
  • Proven track record of ministry involvement and commitment.
  • Must be proficient in both English and Spanish.
  • Must be able to work on multiple evenings and Sundays.
  • Correctional pastoral experience preferred.
