TxDOT's Bridge Division – Design Section – Shop Drawing Review is looking to hire a Lead Shop Drawing Reviewer – Transportation Specialist V based in Austin, TX. In the Bridge Division – Design Section, we oversee activities pertaining to the creation of in-house bridge, railing, and traffic structures design, and plan preparation; intelligent 3D bridge modeling; research implementation; bridge standards development; historic bridge preservation; bridge design policy; and shop drawing review. This individual will lead a shop drawing review team, review shop drawings for ancillary structures and bridge elements, coordinate reviews by others, and help maintain the shop drawing review database.

Provides [planning, oversight], and high-level technical expertise in structural details and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple bridge construction projects, and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Develops and/or interprets guidelines, policies, and procedures for shop drawing review. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product. 

Essential Duties:

  • Develops and implements statewide shop drawing review practices and conventions for use on project plans.
  • Serves as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • Performs advanced and specialized  shop drawing reviews in support of design activities.
  • Prepares and makes transportation-related presentations at various conferences and meetings.
  • Receives project assignments, determines work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.
  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
  • Reviews work done by others for drafting and calculation errors.
  • Coordinates programs and projects to enhance efficiency and streamline operations.
  • Trains and makes training-related recommendations to staff on new operations.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline. Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience: 5 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

o    Preferred 2 years of which as a lead worker

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Safety Impact Certificate** 
    **Safety Impact certification is not required at the time of application. The Safety Impact certification will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Transportation Specialist V:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken and/or written words
