Position Overview:
The People & Culture Generalist plays an essential role in supporting our commitment to creating a best-in-class employee experience. This position partners closely with the Director of People & Culture to lead efforts in recruitment, teammate engagement, compliance, onboarding, and day-to-day HR operations.
The ideal candidate brings a people-first mindset, a passion for hospitality, and the organizational skills to help support a high-performing and culture-driven team.
Key Responsibilities
Talent Acquisition & Onboarding
- Manage the full-cycle recruitment process for hourly and select salaried positions.
- Post open roles, screen resumes, coordinate interviews, and conduct phone screens.
- Collaborate with department leaders to understand staffing needs and workforce planning.
- Facilitate and execute new hire onboarding, including orientation, documentation, and Day One experience.
- Maintain applicant tracking system and hiring records for compliance and reporting.
Teammate Engagement & Culture
- Serve as a day-to-day resource for teammate inquiries and support.
- Assist in planning and executing engagement initiatives, recognition programs, and internal events.
- Promote a positive workplace culture aligned with The Dewberry’s values and service philosophy.
- Support efforts to improve communication, feedback loops, and cross-department collaboration.
Compliance & Administration
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date teammate files and HR documentation.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, and internal policies.
- Support the administration of teammate leaves, workers' compensation claims, unemployment filings, and safety documentation.
- Assist with teammate investigations and documentation in partnership with the Director.
People & Culture Operations
- Prepare internal communications, reporting dashboards, and status updates as needed.
- Help track teammate lifecycle events, including performance reviews, birthdays, and anniversaries.
- Support updates to the Employee Handbook and policy rollouts.
- Provide general administrative support to the People & Culture department.
Training & Development
- Partner with department leaders to identify training needs and coordinate learning opportunities aligned with hotel standards and operational goals.
- Assist in the planning, communication, and execution of new hire orientation, ensuring a seamless and brand-aligned onboarding experience.
- Maintain training records and monitor compliance with required certifications, safety trainings, and development milestones.
- Support the rollout of employee development programs, including cross-training initiatives, skill-building workshops, and performance coaching tools.
- Contribute to the creation of learning content and materials in collaboration with People & Culture leadership.
- Help promote a culture of continuous learning and professional growth throughout the hotel.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Hospitality, or a related field preferred.
- 2–3 years of progressive HR experience, preferably in the hospitality industry.
- Strong knowledge of HR principles, employment law, and recruiting best practices.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Discreet and professional, with the ability to handle sensitive information with care.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with HRIS/ATS systems preferred.
Work Environment
- Based on-site at The Dewberry in Charleston, SC.
- Typical schedule is Monday–Friday, with flexibility for occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays depending on business needs.
