The Canadian Opera Company (COC) is now accepting applications for Maintenance Operator. This is a full-time, in-person position for the COC in the Building Services Department, Facility Management.

The COC owns and runs multiple properties in Toronto. The Joey & Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre (Opera Centre) is a historic building in the heart of downtown Toronto; the home of the COC and hosts the administrative offices, rehearsal spaces, construction shops, and the Canadian Opera Company Theatre. The Canadian Opera Company Scene Shop is the COC largest construction shop in the Davenport neighborhood.


OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Facilities Coordinator, this position plays a critical role in ensuring colleagues, tenants, and guests have exceptional experiences while working at COC properties. Acting as a good communicator and reliable support for the Building Services Team, the position is responsible for checking all building areas, receiving deliveries, furniture assets, and providing preventative maintenance and repairs to COC physical assets. As a member of the Facilities team, you will play a key role in keeping the buildings in the best condition.


This is an in-person position, as scheduled Monday through Sunday, may include evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintenance & Operations

  • Frequent patrols of the interior and exterior of the building to identify areas that require preventative maintenance, repair, and areas that pose safety/security risks
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on buildings, equipment, and amenities. Including drywall finishes, and non-scenic/theatrical carpentry
  • Resolve issues identified during health and safety inspections
  • Perform or arrange housekeeping tasks as needed
  • Seasonal maintenance of exterior of the building, including snow removal, salting, and courtyard upkeep
  • Inventory control and distribution of consumables
  • Install and maintain all signage
  • Check and adjust temperatures throughout the building
  • Replace lightbulbs and complete domestic electrical repairs
  • Troubleshoot systems as required to support service contractors
  • Notify the Facilities Coordinator when a contractor is required
  • Provide access to contractors
  • Assist contractors as necessary and as appropriate


Safety, Security, and Building Services

  • Work in adherence to all health and safety protocols
  • Maintain logs/records
  • Open/Close the building
  • Manage access control through distribution of keys/fobs, programing doors, and assistance with reception
  • Manage fire and burglary alarm monitoring
  • CCTV monitoring
  • Communicate unsafe conditions or situation with colleagues and tenants
  • Support during emergencies as required.
  • Conduct a regular inspection of all safety equipment such as fire extinguisher, fire warden kits, and first aid kits
  • Manage trespassers
  • Parking enforcement
  • Respond to building-related requests by colleagues, clients, contractors, and the general public
  • Receive and distribute deliveries and mail
  • Move, setup, reset furniture as needed for activities in the building
  • Provide food and beverage service including making coffee when requested
  • Replace printer toner, supply paper, and assist with IT issues as assigned
  • Improve the quality-of-life inside the building with, paint, furniture, and maintenance
  • Change signage and posters as instructed by Senior Manager, Creative & Publications


Other

  • Maintain up to date training
  • Communicate with the Facilities Coordinator when any questions arise
  • Support emergency requests outside of normal operations
  • Attend meetings and staff briefings as needed.
  • Additional duties and task as required


KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent customer service skills, a positive demeanor, and the ability to provide a solutions-based approach to colleague and tenant problems
  • Digitally literate, Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Teams, and Word), WinPAK, ArtsVision, and ability to learn new software/programs.
  • Attention to detail
  • Time-management skills
  • Professionalism, the ability to maintain positive and effective interactions with colleagues, partners, and guests
  • Communication, Strong written and verbal interpersonal communication skills
  • Cognitive Flexibility, the ability to problem solve and re-prioritize as needed
  • Demonstrable skills in drywall/plaster, electrical, plumbing, carpentry repair, and painting
  • Comfortable with heights, ladders, elevators, stairs, small hand tools, material handling methods, small power tools, and driving
  • Experience in health and safety procedures, best practices, regulations, and protocols
  • Maintain a calm demeanor when troubleshooting issues and during emergencies
  • Initiative and ability to work alone
  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time and must be able be able to lift 50 pounds without difficulty 
  • Snowblower operation
  • Reading documentation such as user manuals, and planning documents
  • Willingness to adapt to new situations, and learn new skills
